Wireless internet cards are essential for getting your laptop or cell phone on WiFi (wireless fidelity) networks. Sadly, they can?t also double as a credit card or library card, but if you need to get on WiFi, then that?s what you need. You don?t need wireless internet cards for traditional desktop computers, as you most likely have a modem and digital transceiver device already installed that acts like the card.

Well, almost any card. Wireless internet cards are also called PC cards, which may be easier to look up information for. You need to make sure the wireless internet card is 802.11b compatible (most of them are ? that?s the standard setting). Although you can get any brand, be sure they are compatible to your laptop and your platform (like Windows XP or Mac). You need to make sure they fit in your laptop or cell phone?s card slot, too. Why You Need A Wireless Internet Card

Wireless Internet Cards or Air Cards have become popular in rural parts of America. This may sound like a safe alternative for high speed Internet, however, let me bring to light some of the issues that may arise with these Air Cards.

Let's first take a look at the technology behind these Air Cards. Wireless Internet cards share cell phone towers.... Chances are if you do not receive good cell phone coverage you will not receive adequate Internet coverage. I am assuming the vast majority of rural Americans considering this option are dial up Internet users, who sadly may be trading an already unreliable solution for another if they opt for Wireless Internet cards. Air Cards are usually best suited for laptops.  For example you would be unable to use a wireless router in your home if this was connected to a desktop computer. You should also expect installation charges if you do order one of these cards, unless you are technically inclined to install it yourself.

If you are inclined to still opt for a Wireless Air Card, you will need to tread cautiously and make sure there is some kind of opt out or trial period, not a lot of those providers have such options, but spending between -0 to purchase this device and plan can be expensive if it doesn't work well. Many of providers have two-year contracts with a flat 0 fee for early termination. Check for service guarantees.

The majority of Wireless Internet Aircards services are billed through a cell phone provider.  Think for a minute when you first got your cell phone plan, remember what it was supposed to cost monthly? If you thought your cell phone bill had extra fees just wait. Wireless Internet cards use an allotment, usually 5000 megabytes. When you exceed this allotment, and you most likely will, you are charged rather expensive fees. Just think of the first time you were shocked for texting or data usage on your phone. Now imagine the money you will have to pay after a months worth of Wireless Internet card usage.

There are safer, less expensive and more reliable alternatives to an AirCard Internet provider for rural Americans saddled only with dial up options and that is Satellite Internet service.

Technicians determine your Satellite Internet signal and install if it is strong enough. This is the same process and same technology that applies to Satellite TV. Start up is minimal compared to what it costs years ago. WildBlue Satellite Internet is actually less to start up than competitive dealers and the overall first choice of many rural users. Statements are easy to read and available online with no confusing charges. WildBlue provides the largest data threshold in the industry 7.5-17 gigabytes monthly, so robust in fact that only 3% of WildBlue users actually exceed the limits. If you do, there are no additional fees; your speed is simply slowed down until you have regained enough threshold to get back to full speed. Speeds are approximately 10-30 times faster than dialup.

Retirees today are always on the move, and the baby boomer generation has brought a host of new people to the world of retirement travel. Most retirees have important ties to family and friends though, and being on the road all the time can take a toll on those relationships. But, thanks to new wireless technology, 4G wireless internet can help.

Everybody knows that the internet allows you to communicate with the people you love, and take care of important business when you're on the road or sitting at home. These days though, finding a free wireless internet hotspot can be difficult. This can be even more challenging (or impossible) if you're driving an RV and need to find a parking spot. You can easily spend hundreds of dollars on access fees in cafés and coffee shots trying to get online, only to be slowed down by poor speed and access. With 4G wireless internet, these problems are a thing of the past. A mobile wimax card can keep you connected to the on the road or wherever you find yourself next.

Mobile broadband works a lot like a cell phone, so it doesn't need a wireless router or a public "hotspot" to operate. First of all the equipment for a wireless network has dropped in price significantly in the last few years. It used to be that the wireless router and the wireless access points were two different pieces of equipment and both were expensive. Now with the advent of cheap wireless internet technology has been able to put the wireless router and the wireless access point into one device and save you a lot of money. Equipment that used to cost hundreds of dollars can now be bought for $50. These have dropped in price significantly to the point where they now cost as much as a low end dial-up modem. What Is Cheap Wireless Internet?

Wireless internet cards work on a compatibility system that is based on the IEEE 802.11 wireless network standard. Back in the old days you needed to make sure that all of your equipment was compatible and to do this meant buying a complete wireless internet set up from one manufacturer. There was not cross compatibility and if you tried to get your wireless internet card to work with a different manufacturer?s access point then you were probably in for a long day. Wireless internet connections in the old days were not nearly as smooth and as seamless as they are now and setting up a wireless network took a lot of know how and a long time. It was like any other cutting edge technology that gets released when it is not ready and has to evolve over time.

Compatibility

Wireless internet cards work on the IEEE 802.11 wireless network standard and you can get either an 802.11b compatible card or an 802.11g card. Most people go with the cross compatible 802.11b/g card which is probably a smart move. Unlike the old days, the cards today all talk to each other although you still get what you pay for and lower end cards sometimes have a hard time talking to lower end wireless routers. It is a problem that can usually easily be solved with a firmware update on something or reloading the drivers for something else but the best way to avoid all of that is to buy quality right off the bat.

There are a lot of little tricks and tips that people will give you about wireless internet cards but I think the best tip is that if you are buying a wireless internet card for a desktop PC then get a USB external wireless internet connection. There are a lot of reasons for this but chief among them is the fact that a USB device is going to be more universally compatible with any router and you can move a USB external connection around to try and get better reception from the router. If you install a card into your computer then your chances of moving that around to get better reception are pretty slim. An external USB connection is nice because it is easy to move and adjust.

A Little History About Wireless Internet Cards

In the first Star Trek movie the good doctor Bones McCoy said that engineers love to change things and in many cases he is right. When it comes to wireless internet cards for laptops the connectivity, the shape, and the size has remained the same for years but the functionality has changed a lot. You can now get wireless internet cards for laptops that are the size of a credit card, plug into the expansion slot on your laptop, offer a clear cellular connection, and can also be used as a cell phone with the addition of a plug in ear piece. It is pretty impressive what they can do with the technology these days and the future can only bring more surprises.

But As The Technology Changes So Does The Connection

They now make wireless internet cards for PDAs along with laptops and some laptops are coming with an extra slot where you can use the card designed for a PDA as a wireless internet card for your laptop. This is the one field in which laptop technology adapted rather than changed. You can get a wireless internet card for you laptop that can also fit your PDA which makes the card half the size of the normal PCMCIA expansion card used in a laptop even to this day. The cross platform integration of these different technologies is amazing to watch and there may come a day very soon when PCMCIA slots are removed from laptops all together and when you go to get a wireless internet card for your laptop you will be getting something the size of two postage stamps. It boggles the mind.

Technology marches forward and today you can buy a laptop which has the wireless internet connection built into it already. But don?t look for an antenna or anything like that like they used to have when wireless internet for laptops first came out. Now everything is smaller and smaller and soon your laptop is just going to be a screen with a processor more powerful than any computer you have ever seen.
