Choosing The Best Wireless Internet Card

There is no doubt that we need internet access all the time to keep out personal and professional lives from going haywire. This is the reason why wireless internet technologies were invented. Though Wi-Fi is a good option, it is available only in bigger cities or big places such as malls, offices and provides you free wireless internet access. If you want to access internet in woods, then there is no way to do it there, unless you have wireless internet card. But how do you choose the best wireless internet card? Read on further, and then this question will no more be mystery.

Compare Prices And Service Providers

The best wireless internet card will not cost you more than $100, but do not make it a selection criterion. You get best deals on wireless internet cards nowhere other than the internet. When we say prices, the initial cost is not the only cost involved. Once you buy the card, you will be paying to the service provider monthly. if you intend to use wireless internet card only for checking mails, then go for limited usage plans, on the other hand if you are not sure how much of data usage you will need in a month go for unlimited access plans to be on safer side.

Choice of service provider also matter a lot if you really want to choose best wireless internet card. It can happen that the service provider that you are choosing does not have network sharing agreement with all of the telecom companies. In such cases, your wireless internet card may not work in that particular area. Also if the card is based on CDMA technology and travel to an area which has only GSM technology, your card won’t work. Try to workout these things beforehand to avoid troubles later.

Basically there are tow types of cards, and depending on your preferences and need, decide which wireless internet card is best for you. If you have more than one laptop, then USB wireless internet card is best suited for you. These cards can also be attached to a PC or any other laptop. If you know that the card you are buying will be used on just one notebook, then PCI wireless internet card is best for you.

Wireless internet cards can be really useful in remote areas where you need internet access. May you find the best deal on wireless internet cards after reading this article.

Wireless internet cards are essential for getting your laptop or cell phone on WiFi (wireless fidelity) networks. Sadly, they can?t also double as a credit card or library card, but if you need to get on WiFi, then that?s what you need. You don?t need wireless internet cards for traditional desktop computers, as you most likely have a modem and digital transceiver device already installed that acts like the card.

Pick A Card, Any Card

Well, almost any card. Wireless internet cards are also called PC cards, which may be easier to look up information for. You need to make sure the wireless internet card is 802.11b compatible (most of them are ? that?s the standard setting). Although you can get any brand, be sure they are compatible to your laptop and your platform (like Windows XP or Mac). You need to make sure they fit in your laptop or cell phone?s card slot, too. Some wireless internet cards come with a mini antenna that can help make the signal stronger. These are great for cars.

It usually is best to get the wireless internet cards offered by your wireless internet service provider (for example, get Verizon PC cards if you subscribe to Verizon?s wireless internet service). This way, you are guaranteed compatibility and a place to complain to in case things don?t work out.

Just What Do They Do?

They?ll give you a headache when you look up information about them on the web, I can guarantee that much. Put into layman?s terms, wireless internet cards not only act as transmission receivers to help you find and get on the WiFi network, but also give your memory storage and input/output (I/O) capabilities. There are separate cards for digital cameras that look like but do not work as wireless internet cards.

Wireless internet cards need a sufficient amount of power in order to keep on running, so you need to be sure your cell phone or laptop battery is charged. If you start suddenly getting a lousy transmission, it may mean your battery is running down. For those worried about the environment, there are solar cell phone and laptop battery chargers available. For the rest, you usually stick the recharger apparatus into the wall socket at one end and the phone or laptop in the other.

Although they take a little while to get used to, with practice you?ll be able to work the card as easily as any other gizmo you have lying around the home that we all take for granted.

An internet hotspot is nothing more than a wireless Internet access service that is made available at certain public places such as coffee shops and shopping malls and eating places as well as hotels, airports and convention centers and many other such places. You can make use of free wireless internet access services or you might have to pay for using the wireless internet service; it depends on the way that the public places operate.

Powerful Free Wireless Internet Software

When it comes to picking suitable free wireless internet software you should check out the one known as 2hotspot that is very powerful as it allows anyone that knows how to use such software to instantly create their own wireless hot spots with their wireless routers or Wi-Fi cards. This is excellent free wireless internet software that can even be used to create a commercial wireless hot spot network.

Of course, it takes more than installing this free wireless internet software to get it to work for you. First of all you will have to get the Windows Internet Connection Sharing (ICS) up and working so that you can then make 2hotspot to start working. After that it is a matter of adding 2hotspot to your network names (SSID) and then you have to tweak the Network Connections to get the whole thing off the ground.

This in turn means that you have to then add 2hotspot to your available wireless networks and to ensure that you check the tab named “Allow other network users to connect through this computer’s internet connection”.

Having done this you have to then select 2hotspot on the client computer and then click the connect button and in case the server is connected then the client computer will hook on to the Internet. Once you have established the Internet connection you will need to download 2hotspot from its website after which you install the free wireless internet software. After the installation is complete you can simply select the 2hotspot wireless connection which then allows you to make full use of your own personalized hot spot.

In today’s world, life without the Internet is unimaginable. What’s more, with the proliferation of laptops and the advent of wireless internet it has become much easier for people to stay connected. If you want to make full use of free wireless internet it pays to learn about how to download free wireless internet to make use of free Wi-Fi features. To find the appropriate free wireless internet you should check out directories such as wififreespot.com.

Ethernet routers are a key component of your home computer system if you have many devices that need to be connected to your computer. For example, printers, modems, other computers and game consoles. Having Ethernet routers at home is a good way to connect all these devices seamlessly into one machine and the Internet.

Usually you can connect up to four devices with Ethernet routers. Depending on how many devices you need connected to your computer and the Internet you can find a router, which allows more devices. Any device that you wish to connect Ethernet routers must have an Ethernet network adaptor.

Adding On

If you have looked at Ethernet routers that have less Ethernet connections than you need but think that such models fit into your budget you can simply adjust them. Using a network switch will allow you to expand the number of devices that you can connect.

Having a wireless access port is a handy thing to have; it will take up on of the access ports but at the same time will allow many wireless devices to work. The drawback is that other Wifi computers using the network at the same time will slow down the system significantly.

Advantages

Ethernet routers have an advantage over simple Ethernet cables in that you can connect more devices to your home network system. Ethernet cables restrict you to only two devices or two computers. If you find yourself with an increasing amount of devices that need to be connected to one central computer then Ethernet routers are the way to go.

You may also be tempted to use an ad hoc Wifi system instead of an Ethernet router. While this does allow you greater flexibility in terms of distance from the central system and the number of devices, it does have drawbacks. It is a less secure system and is usually used on a temporary basis. Ethernet routers are more secure.

For an ad hoc system to work properly all devices must have a Wifi network adaptor. You may also have to configure the adaptors to ad hoc mode as usually they are configured for the typical infrastructure mode. This might take up some extra time to set up and is a lot more complex than simple Ethernet routers.

If you have multiple computers that need to be connected it may be worth it to use an Ethernet switch or hub. The only disadvantage being that one computer must be connected to the Internet. The other computers will access the Internet through this central computer.

Wifi routers are great for someone on the go who needs to be constantly connected to the Internet. Unfortunately not all Wifi routers are the same, different routers will give you different signal strengths. If you have a router with a good signal then you should be able to connect to the Internet at a higher speed and with greater distances from network areas.

You will also have a more stable Internet connection; the erratic Internet connection is one of the downfalls of using Wifi. Luckily you can eliminate this problem by using strong Wifi routers. This way you can continue to use your laptop practically anywhere without problems.

Antenna Strength

The strength of Wifi routers signals depends largely on its antenna. Most Wifi routers offer an 802.11b range; this is the standard but not the best signal strength. You would do better to get a router with an 802.11g range. This is a much stronger signal and will give you a more reliable connection.

The 802.11b and 802.11g routers each have one radio and antenna. In this respect both routers are disadvantaged in comparison to wireless N units. Wireless N units are Wifi routers with a signal range of 802.11n. Such routers have two or three radios and will give you the maximum signal strength.

Increasing Power

You can increase the power of Wifi routers at home without too much trouble. First check what type of antenna your router has. If it is an omni directional antenna then it has a more limited range than one with a directional antenna. You can easily replace the omni directional antenna with a directional one and instantly get a greater signal range.

Sometimes directional antennas are marketed under the name aftermarket antennas. Its the same thing and some companies will offer to upgrade your router with such an antenna.

Other Things You Can Add

There are also other things you can do to increase the strength of your router signal. Using a wireless range extender can increase the signal strength without changing the antenna. Alternatively you may not have to do anything to your router. Simply changing to a different Wifi client may allow you to have greater signal range.

If your computer is in an area with relatively few walls and anything else that might block signals then you dont have to worry too much about your Wifi routers signal strength. A standard router will do just fine.

I bet you didn?t know that you can pull out your laptop at a lot of places around town like restaurants, coffee shops, libraries, hotels, and airports and get an internet connection if you have a wireless connection on the back of your laptop. No you aren?t stealing someone else?s wireless internet connection, you are experiencing wifi and it is a growing thing all over the country. When it first started wifi was something that was limited to a small amount of providers and it cost a great deal of money to use. But as time went by, and large corporations saw the potential for offering wifi, wifi has now switched from being something that restaurants and hotels had to find for themselves to being something that is being offered to them by large corporations for free to offer their customers. One of the companies out in front of the wifi movement is AT&T.

AT&T wifi is springing up all over the country and, very soon, it will also be all over the world. Offering people the ability to connect to the internet through a public and open connection can seem risky but AT&T wifi offers some strong security measures as AT&T understands the dangers of open internet connections. AT&T wifi can be found, currently, in over 55,000 locations throughout the country and that number grows every week. As the internet reaches the rest of the globe expect to see AT&T wifi cover the planet and soon everyone will be able to connect to the internet using AT&T wifi.

My How Times Have Changed

Publicly accessible wifi used to cost a lot of money. There have been companies that have charged as much as $17 or $18 an hour just to use the internet at someone?s favorite coffee shop and the security in those early networks was not that great. Enter AT&T who has a great understanding of how to set up a safe public network and also has a huge customer base that can purchase their wifi service if it was offered in enough places. To go along with their purchase of Cingular, AT&T extended their commitment to the wireless market with AT&T wifi and now offers customers the chance to purchase monthly subscriptions, for very reasonable rates, to connect to the internet using AT&T?s wifi system. Since it is currently one of the largest public wifi systems in the country it just makes sense.

You can log on to the AT&T wifi network by just using your regular laptop with a wireless connection and the connection pier software you load from AT&T. You do not need to input a credit card number to access the internet and all of your personal information is safely stored on AT&T?s servers. AT&T saw the wireless market taking off years ago and they decided that they wanted to move their customers from phone lines that can tie you down to completely wireless connections for wherever you are. What better company to offer such state-of-the-art services than AT&T?

A few years ago, big cities like Chicago and Philadelphia announced proudly that they were going to turn the entire city into one giant ?hotspot? so that all of the population could have free broadband wireless internet. These announcements sounded too good to be true ? and, alas, that?s exactly what it has turned out to be, so far. This article will focus on Philadelphia?s problems in particular, because that city also faces a growing class gap and one of the highest murder rates of any city in the country.

Whatever Gave Them The Idea

In Philadelphia, the class divide is widening rapidly. This means the rich get richer and the poor get poorer. Philadelphia has a very high standard of living, a 7% sales tax and wage tax and often a bankrupt city budget. Many people cannot live on minimum wage, or even two a job a dollar over the minimum wage. In this way, many people are eliminated from getting higher paying jobs because they can?t afford job training, college or even learning how to read.

Broadband wireless internet for every Philadelphian seemed to be the answer. This could give the poor the information access they need as well as encouraging others to move to the city. This was also hoped to help businesses large and small. Since broadband wireless internet was becoming less and less expensive, it seemed financially possible to fund broadband wireless internet rather than costly job training programs that many poor Philadelphians might not be able to travel to.

What Happened

First off, Philadelphia Mayor Street awarded the contract to EarthLink, even though industry leaders like Verizon were willing to give the project a go. Things went downhill fast ever since. In test market after test market, everyone who volunteered for publicly funded broadband wireless internet service reported how unhappy they were with the service. Often, the service would only work one day a week, or only a few minutes a day.

Broadband wireless internet reception technology just is not at the point of being able to handle a consistently strong signal to a huge area like an entire city (or even a third of a city) because buildings, power lines and even walls interfere with reception. However, individual WiFi accounts work very well, since the average WiFi user is on the go and can physically take phones or laptops to hotspots. Until WiFi reception technology improves, there will never be municipally funded WiFi.

If you haven?t been living under a rock the past few years, then you?ve been bombarded with print and media advertisements about getting high speed wireless internet access. These advertisements have been targeted for the average web surfer as well as for businesses. Whole cities have set up grand plans to go ?Wi-Fi?. So, what?s all the fuss about high speed wireless internet access?

The Pros

The most attractive aspect of getting high speed wireless internet access is that it costs so much less than dial up, cable or broadband. The information is not coming through a modem or cable lines, but through the air in radio waves. So, you don?t need to be hooked up to a cable or telephone wire in order to get your information to your computer or PA or cell phone screen. All you need is to find a ?Wi-Fi hotspot?.

And, as the name implies, high speed internet access is a lot faster than broadband, cable and goes warp speed compared to dial-up. If you view a lot of movies or live news feeds, this is especially desirable. If you are hooked up to your business intranet, you can gain the information you need to your employees and clients as quick as light. And this technology is portable, so you are not stuck in one place.

The Cons

The biggest downside to high speed wireless internet access is the lack of security as compared to dial up, cable or broadband. Remember how I told you that information is transmitted through the air like radio waves? Well, if the radio is tuned to the right frequency, then anyone with a radio can listen in. This leaves your valuable data exposed to online criminals.

Security is being improved in high speed wireless internet access all of the time. Many wifi packages send the information out encrypted, meaning that unless you have the right password, the information an online criminal can pick up will look like mumbo jumbo. But you also need to use your common sense, such as not letting anyone peer over your shoulder.

Another downside is that you need to get new equipment that can pick up and receive Wi-Fi signals. Not every desktop or laptop can be converted to Wi-Fi. And high speed internet access signals are not constant all over the world. And since Wi-Fi is becoming do popular, too many Wi-Fi devices too close to each other will interrupt the signal.

Ever since its invention in 1991, people have been asking, ?How does wireless internet work?? Mostly, those people were geeks and scientists, but by the mid-1990?s, with dial up internet becoming more and more affordable, the average person started hearing about other internet options and began wondering, ?How does wireless internet work??

At first, the incredible cost of the new technology prohibited many from looking any further. But now wireless internet is cheaper than dial-up and available to many areas on the planet. This is because of a secret energy supply system incorporating Giant Space Hamsters on treadmills to power the transmission antennas.

What?

Okay, now that I?ve got your attention, maybe you?d really like to know the actual answer to, ?How does wireless internet work?? Even if you don?t really care, humor me. Besides, you never know if you might get stuck on a game show someday and get to the million dollar round question, which turns out to be, ?How does wireless internet work??

But Seriously, Folks?

Actually, there isn?t anything too new or complicated about how wireless internet does work. It?s also called wireless fidelity (WiFi). It works very much like radios, only a slightly different medium. With huge antennas broadcasting in electromagnetic radio waves (different from AM or FM waves), the signal goes out to a limited area to whatever hungry receiver is ready to pick it up. It?s like a roaring river that roars all the time and you get down at a safe place and dip your bucket in.

Instead of having a radio, you have a computer equipped with some kind of WiFi reception device. As of 2006, all computers, laptops, most cell phones and PDAs now are made with WiFi receivers. If you have an older model, you?ll need an adapter. Now, this is where the bad news comes in. You have to subscribe to a service, like you do for a cable service, in order to legally use WiFi. This is where you have to shell the money out, but the costs have been getting lower all the time.

Also, you just can?t set your computer anywhere and pick up a good quality signal. Like a radio, you need to move it around to the best place to find the best signal. These signal places are called ?hotspots? in geek-ese. In your home, you really need a modem or small satellite dish in order to be able to get a hotspot in your home.

Yeah, I know, I like the Giant Space Hamsters on treadmill theory, better, too.

Long range WiFi is a technology that is used for low-cost, unregulated point-to-point connections, usually as an alternative to cellular networks and satellite links. Long range WiFi has a number of applications, including for providing coverage to a large office or business, establishing point-to-point link between large skyscrapers or other office buildings, and bringing the Internet to remote construction sites.

Advantages

One of the biggest advantages to using long range WiFi is that you are able to access the Internet from almost anywhere, and this makes it especially convenient for people who tend to travel around a lot or who need to use the Internet for a variety of purposes throughout the day.

Just remember to look for WiFi hotspots, areas where the Internet connection is going to be as strong as possible. This is important because you want to make sure that your connection is not going to be dropping in and out, especially if you are trying to get important work done or chatting on a messenger service.

WiFi hotspots provide Internet access to wireless network device in public locations around the world, such as downtown centers and cafes. You can use your computer to connect to a hotspot using a WiFi network adapter, and if you have a newer computer there should be an adapter build right into the computer. Depending on the type of computer and personal preferences, you can use any card adapter from USB, PC Card, ExpressCard, or even a PCI card adapter.

Drawbacks

Although there are certainly plenty of advantages that are associated with long range WiFi, there are also certain drawbacks or problems as well. Car alarms, for instance, as certain car manufacturers use the 2.4GHz frequency for their car alarm internal movement sensors. Because of channel overlap here there will most likely be problems for certain channels and this can clearly be seen with spectrum analyzers.

Landscape interference is also often included here, and obstacles are among the biggest problems when it comes to setting up long range WiFi. Buildings, steel frames, and sheet metal in walls or roofs may efficiently reflect WiFi signals for instance, therefore causing an almost total loss of signal.

If you ever have any difficulties with the process of setting up or maintaining your long range WiFi connection, the first thing you should do is contact your Internet service provider who will be able to guide you through each step involved in the process here.

If you want the best from your computer games, no matter what system you use, you will benefit from going Wi-Fi (wireless fidelity). The same stuff you hear being touted for cell phone service and business internet is also a tremendous benefit for any computer game enthusiast. In order to go wireless, you need wifi adapters. But are all wifi adapters the same?

Xbox And Peripherals

One of the really annoying aspects of playing a game is someone accidentally or on purpose pulling out a plug at a crucial moment. And it?s safer not to have so many wires for pets to chew on or to get tangled up. Xbox, perhaps the most popular gaming system, puts out its own wifi adapters (made by Microsoft). Even if you have PlayStation 2, you can hook up wifi adapters made by Microsoft, or an Ethernet bridge device. These fit in the USB outlets on your peripherals like the game system, printer or networked storage drive.

PDAs

Personal Data Assistants are great for their portability ? and their access to great games on the internet. In order to sniff out wifi hotspots, you need wifi adapters, of course. Most PDas are now made with wifi adapters included, but not all of them. Palms-type PDAs have not found reliable wifi adapters, so you may be better off just getting a new PDA. However, if you have Pocket PC, then there are many wifi adapters at your command. Your PDA should have slots that wifi adapter cards can fit in. Always check to see about return policies before you buy, just in case a card might not be compatible.

Desktops And Laptops

Since wifi is now becoming the norm, almost all computers made in the last couple of years will include built in wifi adapters so you can fit a card in. There are wifi adapters made for Windows, Mac and Linux for those of you who have older computers. You?ll need to add an external USB adapter with a cable (making your system not totally wireless, but great for internet gaming). Like getting the best radio signal, you might need to move your laptop or desktop about to get a better reception, so you need as much flexibility as you can.

When getting wifi adapters, it?s usually best to stick with one brand, if possible, because you?ll be better assured that everything will be compatible. Always check out the specifications (specs) before buying to see if you have all the equipment needed to run it.

Having a wi-fi connection can be very advantageous for you and your household. You would actually need the right kind of wi-fi antenna to meet the needs and requirements of your wireless fidelity connection. It is best to know how the different wireless fidelity antennas work to be able to fully understand and meet your needs. Many people recommend that a bigger and more powerful wifi antenna can help you boost your signal and make wifi connectivity better.

We usually need wifi antennas to be able to connect from one point to another. There are many advantages of both directional and omni-directional antennas. It all depends on the needs of the individual or company and the range that they want to reach.

Directional Wifi Antennas

As the name of this kind of wifi antenna describes, it is a directional antenna that usually has a minimum of just one direction for the signal to go to. It is usually a point to point signal transmitting system while some have point to multi-point systems. To get from one single point to another, these kinds of antennas are the best ones to use. The wifi antenna with directional capability is often more powerful than the multi-directional ones because the signal strength is usually concentrated.

These wifi antenna systems usually involve two entirely individual wireless points. There are some exceptions to the rule of having a directional antenna. Point to point antenna systems are usually used for signals that are isolated for one direction only. You would need to have a device that can turn the antenna to be able to reach other devices out of its range.

Omni-Directional Wifi Antennas

An omni-directional wifi antenna is usually a base antenna with quite strong signal strengths. These types of antennas can be used for both multi point and directional point systems. This wifi antenna is usually used to distribute the signal from one point to several different devices. These types of wifi antennas are great for many devices that are scattered all over the place. The omni antenna distributes its signal at a 360 degrees range and can be quite effective in reaching devices within the specified range.

There are many different types of directional and omni-directional antennas available. For the directional antennas there are yagis, backfires, dish type and panel antennas. These distribute signals in just one common direction. On the other hand, omni-directional wifi antennas include desktop antennas, mobile vertical antennas, ceiling domes, vertical omni antennas and rubber duckies.

WiFi cell phones are certain cellular telephones that are able to automatically switch between conventional cellular and WiFi VoIP modes, and their basic purpose is to prevent drop out, which occurs when a cell phone set is not able to maintain reliable contact with a repeater. Drop out is a very common problem among all the other, regular cell phones, but with a WiFi cell phone set the frequency of drop out is decreased largely and not something that most users have to worry about.

WiFi cell phones have never been more popular than they are now, and they allow people to make connections using a local wireless Internet access point and seamlessly switch over to a cell phone network whenever they need to. This results in a much greater flexibility in mobile communications as well as potential cost savings.

Most major phone companies these days do offer WiFi services, namely WiFi cell phones, and so you definitely have a lot of variety available to you here.

The Beginning

There were very early versions of WiFi cell phones which actually failed miserably for the first part, largely due to the enormous drain that is put on the batteries, and also because users at that time were forced to manually switch between networks. At this time WiFi technology was not considered at all as advantageous as it is now.

With the tremendous advancements in technology since that time however, WiFi cell phones are now much more convenient and much more advantageous to the user. A few of the best telephone providers that you can go through for this technology include AT&T, Wireless, Verizon Wireless, and Sprint.

Today

WiFi offers a variety of advantages, and is widely available in more than 250,000 different public hotspots and tens of millions of homes around the world. The process of chipsets for WiFi technologies continues to drop as well, therefore making it a very economical networking option included in ever more devices. You can really benefit by using these wonderful WiFi technologies.

The Future

The future of WiFi cell phones looks incredibly bright, especially with the way technology is continuing to advance all around the world. The evolution of wireless networking has really just begun, and the biggest transformations are yet to come. Only time will tell what is to come for WiFi technologies and either way it is sure to remain as one of the hottest accessories worldwide.

If you are ever out and about and you see people on their laptop or PDA using the Internet in a coffee shop or the library for instance, they are using WiFi frequencies. This is another name for wireless networking and is just one of the many great options when it comes to the Internet.

What it is

The process involved with WiFi frequencies is really quite simple, and these wireless networks use radio waves just like televisions and radios. The radios that are used for this WiFi communication are able to transmit and receive radio waves, and are able to transmit on any of three frequency bands.

As long as they all have the proper wireless adapters, there are in fact several different devices that can use a single router at the same time in order to connect to the Internet, and this is one of the most major advantages offered by these WiFi frequencies. You do have to remember however that if the router fails or if there are too many people attempting to gain access to it at once, one or more users may experience interference or even lose their connection.

WiFi Hotspot

A WiFi hotspot is basically an area that wireless connections are going to be strongest in and easiest to attain. If you want to take advantage of a public WiFi hotspot or start a wireless network in your home you are first going to have to make sure that you have the right equipment. Although laptops and desktop computers usually come with wireless transmitters already built in to them, if yours doesn?t then you do still have options.

You can buy a wireless adapter that you take and plug into your computer card slot or USB slot. There is no maintenance required you simply have to install the adapter and the necessary drivers that are going to allow it to operate.

WiFi frequencies are very advantageous and being able to connect to the Internet in public hotspots is going to be very extremely convenient for you. With WiFi frequencies you are able to easily connect to multiple different computers and move around without having to worry about the hassle of disconnecting and reconnecting wires.

If you already have a few different computers networked in your home you can create your own wireless network with a wireless access point. This process is usually easy enough but if you are unsure then you should contact your Internet provider who will guide you step by step through it.

If you prefer to use your credit or debit card in the real solid world for your shopping instead of going online, listen up ? you may be more in danger of identity theft than if you shopped online or carried cash. This is because of the rise in wifi hacking, where online criminals can get a hold of your personal data transmitted over wifi (wirelss fidelity) networks. This is the finding of Aviva Litan, global information technology expert and vice-president of Gartner, Inc. He released his findings in June of 2007.

Online shopping is safer because online shopping websites expect that sooner or later, a hacker is going to try to get personal data about their customers. But POS (Point Of Sale) card swiping machines, especially at gas stations, are not protected from wifi hacking. Litan said that only about 30% of POS card swipe machines are safe from a data breach. Retailers and shoppers need to be aware that an awful amount of your personal data is stored on your credit card?s magnetic stripe. It?s that information a hacker wants and gets through wifi hacking.

Real World Weak Link

Stores in the real world rely heavily on computer networks, where a customer?s personal data races back and forth like rush hour traffic. Many businesses use the Internet to transmit this information. However, more and businesses are attracted to the low cost and convenience of using wireless networks, which beam information out in the air like radio waves. Anyone with a working ?radio? (in this case, a computer) can listen in. This has lead to the rise of wifi hacking.

Companies that use wireless networks also use Wired Equivalent Privacy (WEP), which encrypts ay personal data before it is transmitted, so anyone wifi hacking would only see gobbledygook. However, Latin thinks this is a weak and easily decoded encryption device. Real world businesses have to do better to protect their employees and customer?s data from wifi hacking.

What If You Need To Get Gas?

Until businesses and especially gas stations can get their security act together, Latin advises to either shop online?or use cash. As they say, what?s old is new again. And do not let anyone know your passwords or user names. Never send any personal information over email or instant messaging. Personal information that wifi hackers want includes your Social Security number, bank account number, passport number and driver?s license number.

Wireless fidelity is hailed as a great addition to the success of the internet. Areas where wifi is available for users and their laptops are called wifi hotspots. These areas usually have a limited range wherein users of laptops and other wifi enabled devices can access the internet via the wireless internet service provider. Wifi hotspots can sometimes be a specific area like stores, an entire mall, a restaurant or library. Sometime wireless internet providers even supply an entire small city with wireless internet access.

How To Access Wifi Hotspots

To be able to access a wifi hotspot, you need to have an access point. These access points are called AP and it connects wireless devices together to make up a wireless network in the wifi hotspot. Wireless access points or otherwise known as WAP?s usually need an internet protocol (IP) address to be bale to be configured into the wireless network.

Some wireless access points can interconnect with each other to form a larger network wherein a user can roam. The wifi hotspots that connect with each other does not mind if one individual uses any of the separate access points. This has to be done under agreement of the owners of the wifi hotspots to have harmony in the area. Some companies or individuals owning wifi hotspots assign passwords to be able to connect to their network. In most of these cases, users will have to purchase access to gain entrance into the network and be able to use the hotspot.

Using wifi hotspots can either be free or may need purchase or payment of some kind. There are some owners of the hotspots that give free rein to anybody who can access the hotspot. The only disadvantage to this is that some routers divide the bandwidth among those who have access and eventually, free access means more people using it. This slows down the connection, limiting downloads, uploads and even access to certain sites.

Security Of Wifi Hotspots

Some people have security concerns regarding sharing wifi hotspots. This is because many individuals adept at hacking into computers and firewalls can gain access to any computer currently using the hotspot. There are several solutions that can prevent or lessen the risk of being hacked by using a random hotspot. These include installing VPN in the hotspot like Google Wifi or user authentication. These examples of wifi security are not guarantees to having a secured connection when using a hotspot.

When Freddie Mercury of the super group Queen sang, ?You?ve yet to have your finest hour, Radio,? in Radio Ga-Ga, he was mourning the sweeping changes in music and technology. He never got to hear WiFi radio, which became accessible years after the great singer passed away. Despite all the visual stimulations and new entertainment devices created to capture out attention, we still need to listen to music. Perhaps WiFi radio will deliver radio?s ?finest hour?.

It?s Life, Captain, But Not As We Know It

WiFi radio works much the same as your regular radio or your television. Information gets transported through the air on special waves (this time, electromagnetic radio waves) and can be picked up by gizmos that can pick up these waves and translate it to sound. In other words, WiFi radio is an interpreter of any WiFi radio station it can pick up.

And how many radio stations on the wireless internet are there? Thousands! One WiFi radio, called the Terratic Noxon iRadio, can pick up over 10,000 stations. That?s a lot of choice for the music lover. You can pick up the WiFi international feeds offered by different countries. And there?s almost no commercials and very clear reception. They?re portable and can be powered by batteries or an electrical outlet. In other words, they look and act much like usual transistor radios, but are much, much better.

Most of these WiFi radios include little extras like outlets to plug in your iPod or MP3 player, water resistance and the ability to play podcasts (which only go out through the internet). Channels are listed by genre, by geographical location or alphabetically in case you want a challenge.

What?s The Catch?

The catch with WiFi radio is that record companies and traditional radio stations HATE it and doing all they can to stamp it out of existence. But the internet is the world?s largest library. If you spend time and money shutting down one WiFi radio station, a 100 will pop up overnight to take its place.

The other catch is this is the newest generation of radio technology in existence, which means there are still a lot of bugs to work out. For instance, some radios only come with mono speakers, which can distort the very sounds you are trying to hear. Whoops! Also, you do need legal connection to a wireless internet service, which is a monthly fee usually. The WiFi radios themselves cost a couple of hundred dollars (US).

Wireless technology has advanced a lot in the last few years and one of the things that has changed the most is the introduction of a standard for wireless connectivity. In the last few years there has been something introduced called wifi that is supposed to help standardize the way wireless devices connect which would help improve security. Wifi security has improved a lot the last couple of years but there was a time when security over an open wireless connection was not only non-existant but a lack of security made using an open wireless connection downright dangerous.

The Wifi Alliance created wifi and wifi stands for wireless fidelity. It is a set of standards for wireless connection based on the 802.11 wireless connectivity rules and once wifi was created the process of nailing down all standards began. When publicly available wireless connectivity was first introduced it was a totally open network that anyone could access using literally any home made piece of equipment. If someone wanted to steal information from people using an open network they could whip up a device to steal the information and do so. When wifi came into the picture wifi security was instantly instituted as the standard and the first generation of wifi security was born.

First There Was

The first form of wifi security was a protocol referred to as WEP which stands for Wired Equivalent Privacy. The first standard for WEP was introduced in 1999 and it was marketed as making an open wireless network as secure as a wired network. However it did not take long for experts to poke holes in this form of wifi security and soon everyone from the public to the federal government was demanding a new standard be introduced. The problem with WEP is that it could be cracked using a piece of software readily available for sale. Soon a new standard was needed.

In 2003 the Wifi Alliance announced the release of the WPA security standard which stands for Wifi Protected Access. It was a much more secure system but it still had some flaws in it that the experts were able to exploit. In 2004 the Wifi Alliance released WPA2 which was compliant with all of the IEEE 802.11i standards for wifi security and soon the new WPA2 standard was introduced to all new wireless networking products. The security may not be completely perfect yet but considering that they are trying to protect things that are floating around in the open air they are not doing such a bad job.

Wireless For Internet

The honeymoon is officially over with the wireless for internet and the consumer. Anything smaller, more powerful and shiny gets the wonder working and the wallet out. Although WiFi technology was created as early as 1991, it hasn?t become widely available to the average consumer until the last decade. The most attractive aspect about the wireless internet was the cost ? or rather, the lack thereof. This made growth of WiFi more than wireless internet providers or engineers could handle.

Security!

The main problem with the wireless for internet has been its relatively lax security. The wireless internet works like radio waves ? anyone with the right ?radio? (so to speak) can pick up the transmissions. This has given rise to a form of computer hacking called ?sniffing?, where online criminals eavesdrop and use whatever data they discover, including credit card numbers and bank account numbers, for fraud.

The wireless internet industry hasn?t turned a blind eye to sniffers, and has set about trying to counter them through the use of encryption and double ID certifications. Because of WiFi?s limited range, at least you don?t have to worry about anyone on the planet stealing your personal data, like in the traditional internet (who thought we?d ever see those two words together?) A sniffer actually has to be physically in the same area and on the same network in order to pick up a transmission.

Self-Regulating

The wireless for internet industry has so far been self-regulating, and looks as if it?s going to stay that way. They cooperate with governments when they have to, but also look out for the individual client. Considering all that governments have to worry about, perhaps it?s best that WiFi be left to the WiFi industry specialists. But they always have to answer to the consumer, who can be a lot stricter than government regulations.

However, the governments of America, Japan and the European Union do regulate Wifi antennas? Equivalent Isotropic Radiated Power (EIRPs, also known as dBm or mW). Yes, these antennas put out a bit of radiation that may be detrimental to the public health, which is why they are situated in low to no populated areas.

With still some kinks to work out in the areas of security, regulation and consistency of signals, the honeymoon with WiFi is over. However, there is a definite commitment to keeping the marriage going on both sides. Wireless for internet technology always improves and customers continue to buy what?s available.

WiFi (wireless fidelity) is a relatively new technology with relatively new companies acting as wireless internet service providers. Although it is technically possible to access WiFi without the use of a wireless internet service provider, this is illegal. It?s just like with cable ? illegal access can land you in jail. Considering how inexpensive wireless technology is in comparison to cable, phone lines or other utility bills, a wireless internet service provider is worth paying for. But how do you choose? By running your potential candidate through this checklist, of course!

Is It Available In Your Area?

This might seem like an obvious first point to check out, but it is surprisingly overlooked by many potential customers. Some areas of the country, not to mention the world, will have only one wireless internet service provider covering that area. Since WiFi is becoming the norm rather than the exception, many companies are emerging to cover this need of giving customers a choice.

If you travel a lot, you need a wireless internet service that covers a majority of the country. Even though some providers like Allnet only cover 35 states, they do have agreements with other wireless networks so that you?re not left out in the cold. If you travel to Philadelphia, for example, and you are on Allnet, you will have to use Verizon, which is king in the area, but has an agreement with Allnet to let all Allnet customers use their network.

Have You Ever Heard Of This Company?

Since most wireless internet service providers are only ten years old or less, they do a lot of advertising and special deals in order to make up for their lack of experience. You need to ask around at work or trusted friends or online forums what wireless internet service they recommend. You need to beware of fly by night companies. If you have never heard of the company before, no matter how cheap their rates, move on. You can even check the Better Business Bureau to see if your candidate is in any trouble.

What?s Their Customer Service Like?

You need to be able to get hold of a human being in order to resolve any problems that you (hopefully won?t) have. Being able to get hold of someone fast who makes sense and works with you to get you help is more important than cheap monthly rates. Then only way to test a wireless internet service?s customer service is to bite the bullet and call them.

Technology changes so fast, full of jargon and anocryms, that it can seem a little scary trying to keep up. But wireless networking isn?t anything to be afraid of. Unlike 8-track tapes, this technology has all the makings of sticking around for a long time. Buying wireless networking devices and services is a wise investment for individuals and businesses. Even if you are a ?newbie?, you should be able to get the hang of wireless networking (nicknamed WiFi)in a shorter time than it takes to learn how to ride a bike.

What Is It?

A wireless local area network (called WLAN or LAN) is very much like a local radio station. It uses antennas and electromagnetic waves instead of cables or phone lines in order to send and receive information. If you have the technology, you can pick up these transmissions. It is illegal to pick them up all on your own, such as with cable TV, so you will need to hire the services of a wireless network. Often your cable or phone company will offer wireless networking services.

What Do You Need?

If you buy a new phone, laptop or PDA (personal data assistant), they will have wireless networking adapters included. If you have an older model, then you can try a WiFi adapter, which isn?t entirely wireless, but close enough. You then need the services of a wireless networking provider and to have those bills paid. You then need a wireless internet card (which fits into a slot in your phone or laptop or even your computer game console) and a hotspot.

What?s a hotspot? It?s a place where you can receive WiFi signals. Like with radios, you might need to physically move your device around a room to find the best reception. These hotspots are often strongest in airports, libraries and internet cafes. You can pick them up in your home, but keep in mind that buildings and trees can interfere with transmission. If you are getting wireless networking for your business, with many devices linked together, be sure you keep positions of walls and doors to a minimum.

Stay Safe

Your wireless networking service should contain security precautions like ways to encrypt your emails so that no one else on your network can listen in. Installing and regularly updating a firewall also helps a lot with your security. Also, use your common sense. Don?t leave your laptop where someone can steal it and never tell anyone your password or user names.
