Using DSL for home Internet purposes is a smart idea. Its fast and easy, if you already have a phone line at home then you can use DSL Internet. Having DSL routers is very useful if you operate a small business at home or have multiple computers at home. A DSL router will allow you to see what information is coming or going from each computer.

A router basically analyzes all data in your computer network to determine where that data should be sent next. Different routers will offer you different things so determine what you want from your DSL routers before making a purchase. Your Internet provider might also offer you some practical advice on what routers to buy.

Two in One

Sometimes DSL routers manage the various connections between computers through DSL modems. Doing this allows all the computers to share the same DSL service. This is perfect if you want many computers to all have the same IP address. It is also easier as you dont have to install DSL routers later on. These types of routers are sometimes known as residential gateways, dont get confused if this term is used.

Ease of Installation

When you are looking at different DSL routers you have to factor in how easy the system is to set up. This is not so important if you have experience in setting up software and hardware for your computer. However most people need some help, look for DSL routers that come with a comprehensive manual that goes through the installation process step by step.

You should also make sure that you have good tech support when selecting your DSL routers. Making sure that there is someone on hand to help you with any problems that crop up is time saving and takes out a lot of frustration. Once you have your DSL router in place you dont have to worry about it anymore. Your Internet connection will always be there, there is no need to log on or off your network.

If you do go for the option of DSL routers built into modems then you want to make sure that the DSL modem you have chosen will work with the line that you have. Not all DSL modems work for all lines. Check with your Internet provider what modems will work and which ones wont. This will save you time and money, not to mention the effort of installing a router and then taking it out again.

Ethernet routers are a key component of your home computer system if you have many devices that need to be connected to your computer. For example, printers, modems, other computers and game consoles. Having Ethernet routers at home is a good way to connect all these devices seamlessly into one machine and the Internet.

Usually you can connect up to four devices with Ethernet routers. Depending on how many devices you need connected to your computer and the Internet you can find a router, which allows more devices. Any device that you wish to connect Ethernet routers must have an Ethernet network adaptor.

Adding On

If you have looked at Ethernet routers that have less Ethernet connections than you need but think that such models fit into your budget you can simply adjust them. Using a network switch will allow you to expand the number of devices that you can connect.

Having a wireless access port is a handy thing to have; it will take up on of the access ports but at the same time will allow many wireless devices to work. The drawback is that other Wifi computers using the network at the same time will slow down the system significantly.

Advantages

Ethernet routers have an advantage over simple Ethernet cables in that you can connect more devices to your home network system. Ethernet cables restrict you to only two devices or two computers. If you find yourself with an increasing amount of devices that need to be connected to one central computer then Ethernet routers are the way to go.

You may also be tempted to use an ad hoc Wifi system instead of an Ethernet router. While this does allow you greater flexibility in terms of distance from the central system and the number of devices, it does have drawbacks. It is a less secure system and is usually used on a temporary basis. Ethernet routers are more secure.

For an ad hoc system to work properly all devices must have a Wifi network adaptor. You may also have to configure the adaptors to ad hoc mode as usually they are configured for the typical infrastructure mode. This might take up some extra time to set up and is a lot more complex than simple Ethernet routers.

If you have multiple computers that need to be connected it may be worth it to use an Ethernet switch or hub. The only disadvantage being that one computer must be connected to the Internet. The other computers will access the Internet through this central computer.

Computer networks have significantly improved the computing power available to an individual computer by linking the individual PC to other computers and devices. Also, higher powered desktops have been asking for more room space for any incoming data; hence, the birth of the gigabit routers.

Today’s network leaders know that modern demands on a network by its users can telescope the bandwidth noticeably. Faster computers, increased web sources and larger gates to the internet can deliver an intolerable tension on networks with reduced bandwidth access.

If you are in search for a router that supplies high speed connections and wide coverage, then you may consider investing in gigabit routers. These types of routers have superior capabilities than the customary wireless network router. Although typically more costly than other routers, it is considered a healthy investment to purchase such type.

Why Purchase Gigabit Routers?

People had a hard time believing that networks currently require larger frames of throughput. They used to believe that the speed of networks were capable in sufficing the applications of most computers. However, since the advancement of high powered computers, the requisite of a higher form of connection came flowing in.

Now, the need for gigabit routers has been set off by larger companies first, and it never ceased in purchase since then. Perhaps the considerations to take in buying gigabit routers are: numerous data systems, storing and sharing files that cause major impacts on traffic, larger servers and printer farms, video and audio technologies; and lastly, quick and reliable access to the internet. If you are searching for something that will give you optimum speed for network connections, then purchasing gigabit routers is greatly suggested.

Steps To Take Before Buying Your Gigabit Routers

Consider these steps before diving for a buy on gigabit routers: choose a reliable and affordable company that sells gigabit routers, pick one that has the widest coverage and the highest speed, look for the security of your router and pick one that gives utmost protection, look for a router that offers more than just being a “port”; and last on the list, search for a computer or electronic store that sells your desired gigabit routers. If you have more spare time, browse over the internet and learn more about the exact technology that you’re looking for. In this way, you will be guided in deciding a good purchase.

When all else have been planned accordingly, set your mind for the purchase. At one point or another, these gigabit routers may become of tremendous help.

Surely you have heard of a router before, as it is one of the most popular and necessary computer components. There are also wireless routers which hold many advantages over their wired counterparts. Wireless routers add a built-in access point function to a multi-port Ethernet router, which combines multiple Ethernet networks with wireless connections as well.

Hacking Wireless Routers

When it comes to hacking wireless routers, know that this is not always the easiest task. There are a few things that you will need to be aware of before you will be hacking wireless routers, so listen up.

The only reason that you would be hacking wireless routers is to do something illegal, and so this is obviously the first thing that you need to be aware of. What you should really be doing is learning how to protect your router from hackers, and there are a few steps that you can take to do this.

If you do not have a router then hackers will be able to see your computer on the Internet, and so a computer router is then obviously very important for computer security. By adding a router in your home or office you will be able to create a wall to your computer and the Internet, so this is a necessary step for any computer user.

Besides hacking wireless routers there are also other things that you can do to protect your privacy and security.

Although technically the only surefire way to protect your computer from hackers is to never go on the Internet, because in most peoples cases this is not possible, there are other options. Other than avoiding the Internet, the next big thing you can do is set up a firewall.

A firewall is a secure and trusted machine, one that sits between a private network and a public network and which is used to protect your privacy. The firewall machine is configured with a set of rules that determine which specific network traffic will be allowed to pass and then which will be blocked or refused.

With these quick and easy steps you will be able to set up a great security system for your computer and protect yourself not only from hackers but also from Trojans and other computer viruses and threats.

The most important thing is that you understand just how important an issue hacking wireless routers really is and keep this in mind whenever you are using your computer.

There is a lot to explain when someone asks how do wireless routers work? because the system is anything but simple. It can be explained in simple terms but that will leave most people with just the basic understanding of knowing how wireless routers do work. And since for most people, that is all that is needed, the simple explanation is what we will focus on in order to save mass confusion. Only those who are really studying computers and routers in school go into the deep details of how it really works.

Basically, to understand how wireless routers do work, you need to first know that it is used as a device that will connect a computer to another computer, or connect a network to another network. Also, it is a fact that wireless routers do work on how it is possible to have many computers using the same Internet connection. These computers can be somewhere on the same floor as one another or even in some cases, be on a different level as it all depends on the wireless router that is being used.

Types And Where To Find Them

Just as with everything else in life, we have the opportunity of having many options to pick from when it comes to wireless routers. Knowing how wireless routers do work is essential in making sure that you are picking the right type and model for your particular situation and needs. If you get the wrong router, you will not get the results that you expect so if you need help, make sure that you ask the sales rep as they should be able to help you in picking the right product. There is nothing worse then paying all that money only to find out that you picked out the wrong product.

The Internet is probably the place where you will find the biggest selection when it comes to wireless routers. This is important, as you want to make sure you can truly see all of your options so that you are not wasting any money. Also, it gives you the chance to do some price comparison, which could end up saving you a little bit of money. If you tend to prefer in person shopping, most of your electronic stores that carry computers will also carry wireless routers. And, if you have more questions, there is probably additional information there about how wireless routers do work.

What happens when you have two routers and want both to run simultaneously? The second router has to be connected somehow to your existing network without disrupting your first router. Are you getting a headache yet? Dont reach for the aspirin just yet.

There is a simple way to do this; its called cascading. How to cascade routers is really very simple. You just need a little patience, as it might seem time consuming. You will have to do some minor configuration changes so that both routers can work and form one network instead of two different networks.

First Things First

The first step in how to cascade routers is to decide what router is going to be your primary router. Your primary router will be performing basic functions to protect your computer such as filtering and firewalling. This router is in charge of your entire home networks, keeping that in mind you need to choose the one that will give you the most security.

A wired router is the best as it is less likely to get hijacked by malicious software and any opportunistic hackers on the same network. The type of routers you choose is important when learning how to cascade routers, high speed and network features are tow considerations to keep in mind. There is no right choice it is a personal preference.

Cleansing and Configuring

Your secondary router should not handle anything to do with the entire network. This means that firewalls and filtering duties need to be shifted over to the primary router. You also need to configure your routers so that they both have the same IP block range. This step is not totally necessary but it will make things easier when you want to share files and resources, the main reason you want to learn how to cascade routers.

Your secondary router should not be connected to the Internet. To make sure that it does not or stays more or less dormant make sure that your WAN settings have been set so it cannot acknowledge an Internet connection or ignores it. This is achieved by setting the WAN settings to static IP address. To finish it off you need to physically connect the two routers. Use a cable to connect the primary routers LAN port to the secondary routers uplink port. You have now learned how to cascade routers. You have successfully changed your secondary router into a switch.

There are many reasons for being curious about how to install wireless routers in the real world. For the purposes of this article, we’re going to assume that you have thought about it and decided that wireless is the way to go to link your home computers together or to link a business network. If you’ve ever filled out your own taxes or ever successfully programmed your VCR, then you have the intelligence and ability to figure out how to install wireless routers.

Do You Already Have One?

If you have a new laptop, then how to install wireless routers will be a piece of cake. You will already have wireless capability and built-in wireless cards. If you want to hardwire a wireless router to your older desktop computer, then you will need to hire someone to do the job. There are some instances where for newer desktop computers that you can do the job yourself.

For example, if you were to subscribe to Verizon DSL, you have your choice of using a high speed cable modem or a wireless router (depending on availability and if you can afford the more expensive wireless router). You get the router, wires and instructional DVD sent to you, which shows you how to install wireless routers to your home computers.

No, I Want To Make Things Difficult

Of course you do. You want to try and make a home network yourself, dont you? You need to buy a wireless router first. Choosing which wireless router would be best for you is another article entirely, but be sure it comes with instructions. Let’s assume you’ve chosen and are ready to know how to install your wireless router.

First, you need to completely disconnect your old modem from your computer and from your phone lines (if applicable). Then, you need to plug in your wireless router using the same wires as the modem had. Plug it into the same port in your computer tower. Turn your computer on and insert any CD or DVD that came with your router or follow print instructions.

Now you need to configure your router. Follow those directions on how to install your wireless router. Get onto the Internet, open up a browser and type in http://192.168.01. Why do this? Because this is now your default router configuration protocol address, where you can configure your router. You will have to set up a user name and password. Turn off your computer and then start it up again and you should be ready to rock and roll.

If you make a lot of long distance calls and cant afford the bills that pile up then it might be time to consider buying long distance routers. This allows you an easy way to communicate at a very low price. Much cheaper than an analog phone and with a relatively easy to use installation. All you need is a good broadband connection.

Long distance routers may seem like a scary proposition for those of us who are not tech savvy but they really are quite easy to use. They dont require a long and difficult installation process. There are things however that you need to look out for when buying long distance routers.

Phone Companies

When buying long distance routers you need to be careful that you are not tied down to any particular phone company. This can get tricky if you decide that the rates offered are not what you want. If you decide to switch companies you will probably have to buy a new long distance router. So look around carefully at what is available and shop carefully.

You want long distance routers that will allow you to use any company. Beware of cheap routers, most of these are cheap because they are locked to a specific company and you will pay for it later. Quite literally, so always read the fine print and ask plenty of questions. By shopping around you can save a lot more money with a good phone plan.

Voice Quality

As with any product that deals with phone conversations you want to make sure that you have good voice quality. Long distance routers that dont offer this quality should be put aside immediately. It may be cheaper but its not worth it. You may very well end up so frustrated with your new gadget that you decide to go back to regular phone calls. Or worse yet go out any buy a new router. So pick a good one the first time around.

Power Outlets

If you are only planning to use your long distance routers at home then this is no problem for you. If on the other hand you travel quite a bit and this is the main reason you purchased it then make sure you can use it overseas. Meaning that the power supply can adapt to overseas power outlets. Otherwise you will have to bring an adaptor with you. Although the problem is easily solved it is a little annoying.

Although there are literally hundreds of different routers that you can choose from, Netgear routers are some of the very best and there is good reason for this, which you will find out here.

The Company

One of the main reasons that you can trust in Netgear routers is because of the Netgear Company, which always stands firmly behind its products. They have been a worldwide provider of technologically advanced, branded networking products for over a decade now. Their mission is to be the preferred customer-driven provider of innovative networking solutions.

For years now they have been delivering a continuous stream of innovative networking products that deliver a continuous stream of style, value and performance.

The Netgear routers not only work great but look terrific too. There is a selection of RangeMax NEXT wireless-N routers, RangeMax wireless routers, super G wireless routers, A/G dual band wireless routers, G wireless routers, and wired routers.

The Super G wireless routers are some of the most popular Netgear routers, and the 108 Mbps wireless routers are up to 10x faster than 802.11b routers and deliver twice the speed of the standard 802.11g networks when used in conjunction with 108 Mbps wireless adapters.

There is the Super-G wireless modem router with which users are able to surf the web, make Internet phone calls, pick up emails wirelessly, and much more. You can also share your Broadband Internet connection securely, and it features integrated 4-port switch for wired connections, up to 2x the speed and 4x the coverage of a Wireless-G router, and secure access to your office or corporate network using VPS pass-through.

Another of the most popular Netgear routers is the RangeMax wireless modem router. With this router you can wirelessly stream music, make Internet phone calls, surf the web, share your Broadband Internet connection, and use with RangeMax wireless adapters for maximum performance.

A few of the features of this modem include 6 internal antennas which scan for the strongest possible signal path and then adjust to interference, high speed connections with virtually no dead sports, and double firewall and wireless encryption which products your network and data.

When you choose a Netgear router you know that you are getting the best of the best and that you are going to be offered all the features that you need. They are also very affordable which makes them accessible to the average consumer and means that you will not be out as much if you ever need to buy a new one.

Porter Cable routers and more especially, the Porter Cable 690 series routers are among the most dependable, recognizable as well as hottest selling routers in the market today. One of the reasons why you too should consider using Porter Cable routers is because they are designed professionally and will assure you of longevity and they also have several useful features including metal motor housing as well as switches that are sealed against dust that make them very attractive to users.

Ideal For Woodworkers

There is also the 890 series Porter Cable routers that are ideal for woodworkers and these models boast of quick release motor along with multiple bases and which are also very versatile. These 890 series Porter Cable routers boast of a lot of muscle which they get because of being able to adjust its speeds that range from ten to twenty-three thousand rpm and thus they are well suited for almost every different kind of routing task while also providing smoothness in routing that in turn is guaranteed through its advanced electronics which ensures consistent rpm even when being used with heavy loads.

However, there have been problems with Porter Cable routers as witnessed when, a couple of years back the company had to recall about seventy thousand of its 890 series routers mainly because of a fault in their motor coil insulation which had become worn out due to the motors vibration and thus there was an increased risk of suffering from shock while handling the routers.

In fact, these Porter Cable routers were sold from September of 2003 and through till December of 2005 and the products in question were priced between one hundred eighty dollars and two hundred and sixty-nine dollars. If you have such Porter Cable routers, and then you need to stop using them and instead, you should make contact with Porter-Cable to get your router inspected (for free) and even get it repaired in case that is required.

Nevertheless, the 890 series of Porter Cable routers are still very handy routers; more so, if you need routers that pack a lot of muscle and which can be easily adjusted to suit different operating needs. In fact, the model 890 also is designed so as to allow for simple micro-height adjustment on. This is especially useful for woodworkers who more often than not require up top adjustments to the router table.

Also, the 890 series of Porter Cable routers include dust-proof switch (dual position) and overmold finger grips on both motor barrel and handles and these features make it a very handy device indeed.

Since the accessibility over the internet expanded, more and more technologies have been innovated to further bring to a higher degree the simple equipment that were once made. Over a period of years, computers have been transformed continually at one point or another. Together with this evolution is the change in computer ties; from slow paced connections, we have now become joined through the internet in ways almost unimaginable.

The new genre has paved way for technologies which are far advanced than we ever thought of. It used to be that our link through the web is through wired routers; but ever since the influx of high-speed development, wireless has been especially made to remove the limits of re-cabling. Thus, the new ways have proven to be the most flexible ways of connection.

Rate Wireless Routers through Their Price

First off, we rate wireless routers through their price. Take note, they do not come in very affordable prices. Much of them have been built with high quality materials that their cost over the market may be extremely high. However, to rate wireless routers is a priority that all buyers must do, and canvassing its cost would be beneficial in stretching your budget. The ones who know very well how to rate wireless routers are the magazines with their technological reviews.

From there you can compare the price and the quality it brings you. Most of them range from $70 to $120; the choice now relies upon your own preferences. In giving a rate through the prices, remember to balance between the quality and the cost. If you are low on budget, choose the one closest to your savings with a better quality; or if you choose to spend a little more, purchase something from a leading brand and see what the differences are. Remember that buying is ever revolving and controversial, so choose one that’s proven to serve well as tried and tested by many.

Rate Wireless Routers Through Their Speed

Second, one needs to rate wireless routers through the speed at which they connect. The transmission of wireless routers come from radio waves which are easier and faster to connect since impulse travels through the air. Also, the speed at which a wireless connection goes is different for everybody. A high value internet connection may not even work best for you. Since the results come out to be different for everybody else, then to rate wireless routers could be quite unfeasible. Again, a router that doesn’t work on you may work better for somebody else.

Just take a look at some considerations such as your location and your service area provider and decide later on what works best for you.

All you have to keep in mind is the flexibility and mobility which this kind of connection brings. The rest is all up to you and your own peace of mind and comfort.

The process of resetting wireless routers is one that is really quite simple but which can seem incredibly complex, especially to the computer novice. If you are interested in learning about resetting wireless routers, know that there are a few easy steps that you can follow.

The First Step

The first step for resetting wireless routers involves you trying the default password just in case, because something may have happened whether you remember it or not, where the password was changed and reset to the default password.

If this does not work then you will have to move on, and reset the router in order to return it to its original factory settings.

It is important before you get started that you check the owners manual or at least read up and become more researched on the particular router that you have, because the reset instructions vary sometimes from one model to another.

The basics of resetting wireless routers tend to remain the same from one router to another however, and the first thing that you will need to do is to turn the router upside down and take a look at the bottom. There should be a button which will most likely be the size of a pinhole. There should be the word reset listed somewhere near the button, but it will be the only button that looks like a pinhole on the entire bottom of the router.

You want to take a paperclip or similar object that is small enough to poke into the reset hole, and you want to press down on this button. Hold it down for about ten seconds, when you will see the light on the front of the router stop blinking. This will completely reset the router and you should be good to go again.

If you do experience problems even after this, the best thing that you can probably do at this point is contact the manufacturer of the router. You can explain the situation to them and they should be able to determine what is wrong and how to fix it.

Try to keep the owners manual whenever you purchase something like a router, but remember that you still have options even when you dont.

Although resetting wireless routers may seem a bit confusing or intimidating at first, with these helpful tips you should have learned how to do it and we well on your way to solving your wireless reset problems.

Routers are electronic devices that connect a local area network to a wide area network and which handle the task of routing messages between the two networks. A router may create or maintain a table of the available routes and their conditions and then use this information alone with distance and cost algorithms.

The reason for this is so that it can determine the best possible route for a given packet, which means that you are saving time and gaining in terms of convenience.

How They Work

Routers are basically specialized computers that send messages from a computer to its destination along thousands of pathways. A router can be compared to a basic computer but is much more complex. There are several different types of routers to choose from, and a router itself can be split into two parts: the backplane and the set of input/output ports.

The backplane is the motherboard of the router, the part that contains all of the necessary components to make it work. This includes a processor, read-write memory, and read-only memory, for instance.

Wireless Routers

Out of all the types of routers available wireless routers are by far some of the most popular. In the past every router came with a cable or wire, but with these new wireless versions you have much more freedom and less hassle.

Apart from the obvious advantage of having it be more aesthetically appealing by not having cables and wires sticking out everywhere in your home or office, there are other benefits to these wireless routers as well. They also provide an extra layer of security against Trojans and other computer viruses and malicious programs that can infect your computer through an Internet connection.

Just make sure if you do decide to choose a wireless router that you check what wireless connection you need as there are many different wireless routers supporting different wireless standard, compatibility with other wireless devices, wireless encryption support, and other features such as firewall features.

Of course budget should also play a substantial role here, as you want to make sure that you are getting a decent deal on your router and not paying an absurd amount. Check out a few different stores and remember that larger retailers will tend to have lower prices so you may want to go through one of these before you go anywhere else.

You should not be intimidated when you go out to find a router, and instead have some fun with it.

It is important to truly understand what routers for cable internet are and what functions they will perform for you. There are a lot of homes that do not have routers for their cable internet but if they knew all about what routers have to offer they may change their minds. With a little knowledge, you may find that you have been missing out on something extremely important. Once a person truly understands the purpose for routers for their cable internet, they may very well go without a router again.

Routers for cable internet can come in many shapes, colors, brands, and abilities as not all routers are created equally. The two main reasons that people will have routers for their cable internet is for safety and to be more cost efficient. Not all routers provide your computer protection so you must make sure that you are paying attention to the specific details of the router that you are looking at. As far as being more cost friendly, routers will allow more then one computer to use the one Internet connection instead of having to pay for additional services. This can save a household a lot of money of a period of time just for using routers for cable internet.

Prices And Where To Purchase

While you have a wide variety of routers for cable internet to pick from, they generally range in price from forty dollars to one hundred and fifty dollars. Of course, the more computers that you want to hook up through the routers for cable internet, the more money you are going to spend because of the additional ports that are going to be needed. Even if just starting with one computer, you may want to select a router that has extra ports in case you ever have to add another computer to that Internet service. This will save you from having to spend more money down the road on another router.

A lot of routers for cable internet can be purchased from your local electronics store or almost anywhere that sells computers or computer parts and programs. Also, if you are looking for something in particular, you may end up fining what you are looking for on the Internet. While yes, you will have to pay for shipping, most people feel that it is well worth it in the long run. Just make sure that you are researching exactly what it is that you need for your specific situation and make sure that you are getting what will provide you with what you need.

When using routers with LAN broadcast support you can create a computer network in your home, office or building. This is a handy feature to have if you have more than one computer in the house and want them to all run on one network. Routers with LAN broadcast support will neatly tie them together and make running so many computers much easier.

If you operate your business from home then this is a wise decision to make. It will make it easier to share files and information. Something important when more than one computer is being used and sending information quickly is important.

Sharing Internet Access

One of the most important advantages that using routers with LAN broadcast support is that all computers can access the Internet from the same network. It eliminates the need for multiple Internet accounts. Good for when you want to keep costs down and it is also a much more efficient way to handle things.

Technological Leaps

Using routers with LAN broadcast support has evolved quite a bit. In the early stages this type of router could only connect 30 or so computers within a limited distance. Today you can connect more than a 1000 computers with a much bigger distance between computers.

This means you can have many computers on different floors and still connect them using routers with LAN broadcast support. This increase in computers that can be connected via LAN and the distance is a big leap forward and makes it even more convenient to use.

There are now possibilities for this concept to be taken even further. It is now possible to connect computers without physical proximity. This is an even more convenient type of network connection as computers can be literally anywhere and still be connected. This type of system is of course more complicated and requires a lot more money to run.

Sticking to the basics is enough for most people. The bottom line is that if you have several computers in one area and need them to be connected to the Internet then this is certainly something you should look into. It will streamline your network system and allow you to be more efficient with resources.

File sharing can be facilitated with much ease and you can still connect devices such as printers, game consoles and so on so that all computers are connected to these devices. Looking at the capabilities of simple routers with LAN broadcast support even a small office can use this hardware.

Internet is probably the new millennium’s greatest communications expansion. It basically permits every human being to travel from one world to another without moving out of their seats. With just one click of your mouse, you can now know all the information you need.

Web pages, sent email files, and files uploaded and downloaded make the internet world an incredibly valuable medium. However, none of these could work without the bits and pieces essential to the internet world. Unbeknownst to many, both the internet and your desktop is an arena of details that you’ve probably never seen your entire life. In fact, most of the people never knew that there are such things as switches and routers that exist.

Protocols for Securing Switches and Routers

One key to securing switches and routers is to know the availability of options to choose from. Learn first the basics and check with the computer experts as to who gives the better deal for securing switches and routers. Also, it is important to assess the severity of the attacks on your connection.

Remember, a heap of businesses work through the internet, thus making the web world a battleground for attacks. If you have one of these defense systems already, keep in mind that securing switches and routers is a complex task which needs to be examined and performed all the time. A properly implemented security is most especially required in the internet environment; and the cornerstone to this is achieving sufficient protection against any probable espionage on the now highly virtual world.

Multiple Layers in Securing Switches and Routers

There are various ways and levels to which you can attain maximum precaution. You need to come face to face with OSI Layers 1-7 which shields your connection in the key assets. One need not worry about a breech in any of the layers since it wouldn’t compromise the networks which are left. However, it must be configured to a “default system” in order to set your computer in such a way that it is only working through an operational level. Thus, all else must be put off to reduce the possibility of exploitation in the web.

Securing Switches and Routers: To Do’s

Securing switches and routers mean the following: withstanding and remaining operational in the presence of attacks, protection against worms, blockage of the service port as a method for correction, implementation of a tool to ensure authenticated and classified communications, and filtering properties to control access among networks.

Nowadays, it is considered essential to have your network systems be based upon heavy security philosophies. One should consider driving the best security practices to their own systems and to couple with organizations that give you the best advantage. Remeber, these technologies are built to craft a stronger, layered security system.

A wireless router links several computers to a modem using radio impulses in the place of wires. It hastens data transfer by separating data into packets and sending them through a possible direct route accessible in the network. It also provides internet access to multiple computers within its scope. It typically comes with a password security device and an encryption to avert files from getting interrupted by other wireless tools during transmission.?

Much of these systems are currently used worldwide in order to have faster and more accessible internet connections. An ample amount of investment for a new technology may be your way to improved efficacy and streamlined operation. It takes only a minute to decide on better expansion, yet you could enjoy the benefits for longer years.

Two Types of Wireless Routers and Their Use

There are basically two types of wireless routers, namely: 802.11g wireless routers, and 802.11b wireless router. The two types of wireless routers have almost the same specifications. The difference is there bandwidth and other particular details. For the first classification, it entails the user to put in more computers to a network without enabling them to reduce speed.

Also, it permits quicker file sharing and printing. 802.11g wireless routers can also support up to 125Mbps speed. In fact, it offers the widest coverage area and is not easily obstructed. The second classification is 802.11b which covers a speed of up to 11Mbps. It is generally used to lower costs in the case of a tight budget. The main thing with the 802.11b is that the pace is very slow and it can only feed minimum users. With 802.11g, it is very fast but is generally costly. Again, it is always your preference that will be followed; although you need to buy one that works best and at the same time save you on your costs.

Why Connect On These Types of Wireless Routers?

Wireless is essential whether you are home based or working in a company. With both types of wireless routers, you get to enjoy the following benefits: play games with multiple users, share one printer in a group, share different files between computers, and use of only one internet connection among computers. It therefore saves you money, and earns you flexibility in return.

Also, the types of wireless routers enable you to have the following: fast connection speed (from 11Mbps to 125Mbps), offers you a wide range of connectivity, stable and reliable connections; and lastly, it can be easily implemented in your computers. Mainly, these types of wireless routers are often used in businesses and have proven to be very efficient in carrying out tasks thereby revolutionizing your company.

The key to having such connections is to take the steps in a wireless revolution. A very small investment can always be your lead to bigger possibilities with even larger benefits.

If you’ve ever filed your own taxes, then you already have the intelligence for understanding routers. You dont need a special degree in Computer Science. Routers are devices that are essential to keeping the Internet running. You need routers if you have DSL or wireless internet. A router is not inside your computer it’s with your internet service provider.

Virtual Traffic Cops And Postal Carriers

Understanding routers is a bit like understanding the job of a traffic cop and a postal carrier, combined. The main job of a router is to get your information, like an email, to the correct computer and not to every other computer in the world. For example, your ISP is RCN and your friend’s ISP is Comcast. Your email first goes to RCN’s router and them is sent to the Comcast router and then to your friend’s inbox. If it wasn’t for routers, email or Instant Messaging would not be possible.

Configuration Tables

Understanding routers’ ways of doing the magic they do is a little more difficult. Unlike traffic cops or postal clerks, they cant make independent decisions. The reasons they do what they do is because they are programmed to look at certain things and then decide what to do based on a set of programmed instructions.

One of the programmed instructions that help routers understand where messages need to go is called a configuration table. This is a list of rules that tells the router where to send stuff if certain conditions are met, and what to do if the conditions arent met. It also gives the router it’s priorities on what decisions to make first, and what to deal with later.

Understanding routers’ configuration tables is a bit like understanding flow charts. If A happens, then you can do B. But if A and C happens, then you go over to this box over here which tells you to do X. If you are not familiar with flow charts, just enter “flow charts” in your favorite search engine and you will see what I’m talking about.

Data Packages

Emails, IMs, even information you want to put on your web page, is recognized in routers’ understanding as a data package. It is like a regular package going through real world snail mail. How does a postal worker know where a real package goes? By looking at the label. In a data package’s case, the label is called the “wrapper”. A wrapper includes the sender’s electronic address, the recipient’s address and the message or information itself.

Who says that long distance calls are costly? If you happen to know about these voip routers, you might just change your thoughts on the issue. With the arrival of the latest technology, the entire scenario pertaining to communication has changed. A more efficient and inexpensive way of communicating evolved through time; and its use typically cuts your bill to up to 60% in savings. Through voip routers, you can now connect your mobile phones to your broadband internet connection and make calls within your means. Truly, the new millennium has brought in a world of possibilities.

Pros and Cons of Voip Routers

Like many other technological innovations, voip routers also have its advantages and disadvantages. To name a few a few of its benefits are: significantly cheap rates or calls that are almost for free, the benefits that you get from traditional communication companies are also provided for by voip routers (e.g. call waiting, three way phone calls, caller ID, voice messaging, call forwarding and callback services), they are small devices which can easily be adapted for use, voip phones can be taken anywhere in the world; and lastly, the call charges are based per-second. The drawbacks of this device are: phone quality diminishes as internet connections falter, standard phones have better lines than voip routers, and the function is dependent upon a fast computer.

Lowering Costs Through Voip Routers

Unknown to many, voip routers have been available some ten years ago. Voip has now matured a lot and is considered a competitive party by other telephone companies. Nowadays, these institutions bring about new expansions in order to bring to your doorsteps more advanced services.

Calls made through voip are generally considered to be inexpensive. They charge on a per-second basis and show your call register after having made a contact. Also, even if their rates from local to mobile phones are high, they still couldn’t compare to the standard phones which definitely bill you higher. The best benefit is that international calls are made fairly cheap. Due to this kind of advancement, several companies have already made use of such services in order to narrow down their expenditure.

Choosing Service Providers for Your Voip Routers

Service providers should be chosen as to how they perform and by what services they can offer you. Also, you need to consider the ones with the lowest rate plus the highest quality to effectively see the savings that you’re benefiting from these voip routers.

Overall, voip routers have indeed paved way for lesser costs in communication worldwide. Thus, the use of such incentives shouldn’t be put aside and must be considered extremely beneficial in order for people to make further advancement in this kind of technology. Who knows, each might be carrying voip phones with them after a period of years.

Whether you are experienced with computers or not, you may be wondering what are routers. If so, there are several things that you should know, and by understanding what are routers you will have a much broader perspective on computers overall.

What Are Routers?

A router is a device that forwards data packets along networks, and which is one of the most important components if you want to receive the Internet. It is an electronic device that connects a local area network to a wide area network, and which handles the task of routing messages between these two networks.

Also on the topic of what are routers you must understand what different types of routers are available. Basically there are two major categories that all routers are separated into: wired and wireless. There are advantages and disadvantages to both, but the wireless routers are much more popular.

A wireless router is able to do all the same things as a wired router only without the hassle and unattractive appearance of cables and wires of their counterparts.

Wireless routers with Internet connection sharing, networking and firewall features are an alternative to wired routers or networking software. There are even wireless routers available that come with build in DSL or cable modems, and although the wireless routers are not secured as the wired models, you are offered a lot more freedom with these routers.

Where to Buy

Finally on the topic of what are routers you should learn about where the best places are that you can go if you are interested in purchasing a router. Although there are literally thousands of different retailers that offer routers, it is generally best to purchase a router from the same company that you have your modem or computer with.

By sticking to the same company you will not only be keeping all your computer components in sync with each other but also will be more familiar with the brand and so you will be more aware of what to do if you ever experience any technical problems with the router.

Remember when you are shopping for a router that the higher the horsepower the more work the router is going to be able, so go as high as you can afford. You should also look for the convenience of an on/off switch and a built-in work light. It is also important to ensure that the depth adjuster is going to be easy to use and that it is conveniently located.

Wifi routers are great for someone on the go who needs to be constantly connected to the Internet. Unfortunately not all Wifi routers are the same, different routers will give you different signal strengths. If you have a router with a good signal then you should be able to connect to the Internet at a higher speed and with greater distances from network areas.

You will also have a more stable Internet connection; the erratic Internet connection is one of the downfalls of using Wifi. Luckily you can eliminate this problem by using strong Wifi routers. This way you can continue to use your laptop practically anywhere without problems.

Antenna Strength

The strength of Wifi routers signals depends largely on its antenna. Most Wifi routers offer an 802.11b range; this is the standard but not the best signal strength. You would do better to get a router with an 802.11g range. This is a much stronger signal and will give you a more reliable connection.

The 802.11b and 802.11g routers each have one radio and antenna. In this respect both routers are disadvantaged in comparison to wireless N units. Wireless N units are Wifi routers with a signal range of 802.11n. Such routers have two or three radios and will give you the maximum signal strength.

Increasing Power

You can increase the power of Wifi routers at home without too much trouble. First check what type of antenna your router has. If it is an omni directional antenna then it has a more limited range than one with a directional antenna. You can easily replace the omni directional antenna with a directional one and instantly get a greater signal range.

Sometimes directional antennas are marketed under the name aftermarket antennas. Its the same thing and some companies will offer to upgrade your router with such an antenna.

Other Things You Can Add

There are also other things you can do to increase the strength of your router signal. Using a wireless range extender can increase the signal strength without changing the antenna. Alternatively you may not have to do anything to your router. Simply changing to a different Wifi client may allow you to have greater signal range.

If your computer is in an area with relatively few walls and anything else that might block signals then you dont have to worry too much about your Wifi routers signal strength. A standard router will do just fine.

In order for me to explain what the heck Windows Vista wireless routers are, I’m going to need to define some terms. Windows Vista is the latest version of the Windows platform, which is itself in a couple of versions. (Other Windows platforms include Windows 2000 and Windows XP).

Wireless routers are like cable modems in that they help you connect your computer to the internet, except they connect your computer to the Ethernet (wireless internet). However, not all wireless routers will be able to communicate with the Windows Vista platform.

Tricky, Huh?

If you have Windows Vista, wireless routers can be a problem since only a few have been known to successfully communicate with Vista. Since Vista is such a new platform, it has its bugs to work out, and connecting wireless routers seems to be one of them. However, Microsoft has been working with some wireless router makers.

Only those branded “Certified for Windows Vista” are the wireless routers for you. Microsoft’s official website (www.microsoft,com) recommends that if you can’t get a certified router, the next best is “an a/g router such as the Linksys WRT55AG (running the v1.79 firmware upgrade).” (Just take that to your computer store. They’ll know what it means)

Tech Stuff

Let’s get even more specific about Windows Vista wireless routers. You don’t have to understand any of this to get your Windows Vista wireless router to work, so if you skip these paragraphs, I promise I wont be offended. Your wireless router will work best on a 5 GHz (gigahertz) frequency, rather than the standard 2.4 GHz. Microwaves, cell phones, baby monitors and lots of other common devices work on the 2.4 GHz level along with wireless routers.

If you want to run an Xbox 360 (one of those complicated video game systems that makes an Atari look like Pong), then Microsoft recommends that you use the 802.11a wireless adapter for the Xbox 360 to take advantage of the 5-GHz frequency for video streaming.” In other words, it’ll make the video games run smoother.

Sticking It In Your Home

Anything wireless, even wireless routers, need as unbroken a line of communication through the air as possible. Try to keep any home decorations or furnishings from around your router. Getting an antenna is recommended. You might also have to move your computer around the room or in a half circle to get a proper picture.

The main use of wired routers is that they help connect different devices in a network while also using an Ethernet cable in the process, and they provide a straightforward as well as reliable connection at bandwidths in the region of ten Mbps when using simple 10Base technology.

This bandwidth can in fact also go up to hundred Mbps when using Fast Ethernet and even reach thousand Mbps in case you are using Gigabit Ethernet technology.

Affordable And Easy To Use

When using Ethernet cables, it is normal for their length to be in the region of hundred meters though by also using a bridge you can network an entire building. Whats more, wired routers are quite affordable and they are easy to use and in case you need an inexpensive solution to connect a maximum of four computers to an Internet connection, these pieces of hardware are sure to be the best solution.

One of the better wired routers that are available on the market is Linksys BEFSX41 that has VPN endpoint and which is supposed to be a very secure router mainly because of its VPN or virtual private network capabilities which are especially useful if you happen to be traveling and need secure access when on the go. With this wired router, you can easily establish secure links to a remote device and to a computer that has a VPN server or VPN client software.

Another notable feature worth looking for in wired routers is firewalls that should include features such as network address translation that helps in hiding your LAN behind the address of your router, and in addition, there may also be stateful packet inspection or SPI that does the inspection of packets of data that enter your network as well as from the Internet.

Then again, the speed at which the wired routers work is another feature worth looking at before you select a particular wired routers and if you are certain that it works at speeds of as high as 95 Mbps, you can be sure of getting very good throughputs from your router which in fact would be around four times that of a standard wireless connection.

Finally, you need to also evaluate the warranty that comes with different wired routers and a minimum of one year warranty is what you need to look for. Of course, some wired routers come with three-year warranties and those would make the product more attractive though at the same time more expensive as well.

And, if the company also provides better than average customer support, and then this would be another huge advantage that you should also take into consideration.

There are different types of wireless network routers that you can choose from. Each type gives you differing levels of security for your computer. If security for your computer is very important to you then wireless network routers are probably not the best idea. For the best security you should go with a wired router.

If this doesnt deter you then consider the advantages that are offered by wireless network routers, you can use them just like a wired router but there are also wireless access points. This way you can have wireless or wired access or both options.

Alternative

An alternative to wireless network routers that may not allow you the best security possible, you can choose one with built in security software. This way, your router comes fully equipped to protect your computers and networks from viruses.

Things You Can Do

There are certain steps you can take to protect your wireless network routers from hackers and viruses. The first is to disable any email service that uses unencrypted POP and IMAP mail. Using email like this is a clear sign to hackers, they can immediately see all your emails if they are using the same network as you.

Adding an extra firewall to your system is also a way of using wireless network routers safely. This way you have extra security even if you already have a firewall on your computer. This however will not guarantee you total protection and theres still a chance of your computer getting hijacked while using wireless networks.

Turn off your wireless network once you have finished browsing the Internet. Even if you stop using the Internet your wireless network is still online and probing other networks. Shutting it off is the only way to make sure that you are not going to unnecessarily expose yourself to malware, viruses, and hackers.

If you check your bank accounts online or other important accounts using your wireless network then be very careful about usernames and passwords. You have probably heard countless times that you should use different username and passwords for all accounts. Unfortunately not everyone listens to this advice.

Its so much easier to just use the same password for everything. Never do this; it is the best way to have all your sensitive information viewed by a third party. Even passwords that sound alike are not advisable. Use passwords that are unique to each account for maximum safety.

Wireless routers are network devices that work by routing IP traffic across several wireless IP networks and wired networks. They are used to build independent WLANs that can communicate with each other and the Internet.

The Selection

There is quite a vast selection of wireless routers to choose from, but some definitely stand out from the crowd. The Belkin high-speed mode wireless G router is one of the best selling wireless routers today.

It connects to your cable or DSL modem and allows you to quickly and easily share wireless broadband Internet access and files. It includes advanced security features including WEP and WPA which help to protect your computer and keep it out of harms way. Also included is 6 months of free built-in parental control/web content filtering and pop-up, adware and spyware blocker.

Another of the most popular wireless routers is the D-Link wireless G router, which allows you to create a basic wireless network. You can share high-speed Internet connection, files and even chat with your friends and family members online. With this router you can safeguard your network from harmful Trojans and other viruses, and the Quick Setup Wizard that comes with it will save you time by automatically configuring your ISP settings.

There is also the Linksys wireless G router. This router features up to 54 Mbps data transfer rates, 24GHz wireless frequency, advanced security with NAT technology, the ability to act as DHCP server for existing network, built-in 4-port 10/100 Ethernet switch with auto speed sensing, and it is capable up of to 128-bit WEP encryption.

There are many other wireless routers on the market today that are worth considering as well, and it is important that you take the time to consider all your options. You need to make sure that it is a router which is going to offer you the features and components that you need, and also at a price that you can afford.

Choosing a wireless router can definitely be daunting but should not be intimidating. Research the most popular models, consider terms of warranty, and remember to ignore most of the stories told by others.

It is also wise to brand match your network adapters, so consider purchasing a wireless Internet router that is of the same brand of at least one of your wireless network adapters. This will help in more ways than one and also means you will be more familiar with the style.

Let’s get one thing clear right away the highly advertised Verizon DSL is not wireless internet. It is called “broadband”, which is another way of saying “super good cable modem”. Instead of transmitting information through the air, it transmits through fiber optic cables or whatever cables your Verizon provider provides. But there are such things as wireless routers for Verizon DSL.

Warning: Geek Lingo Approaching

A router is not in your computer. A router is only at your internet service provider. It’s one of the reasons why you have to pay such a whopping bill each month. A router is an incredible device that’s part traffic cop and part postal clerk, making sure messages like emails go to the right places. The advantage of using wireless routers for Verizon DSL rather than a cable modem is that it makes your internet connection run faster. That’s the theory, anyway.

Also, Verizon would like you to consider using wireless routers for Verizon DSL because they offer such a plan which is more expensive than using a cable modem. There are many insomnia-curing websites on the Internet that explain how you can hook up wireless routers for Verison DSL yourself, but unless you’re the reincarnation of Scotty from “Star Trek”, forget it.

So, What Do You Do?

If you have a headache by now, you’re not alone. I’ve got one, too and I’ve got to write about this stuff. Consider yourself lucky; you could be me. Anyway, not everywhere in America contains the technical hardware to support wireless routers for Verizon DSL. You have to check with Verizon to see if you live in an area that can support a wireless router at all.

The official wireless routers for Verizon DSL come in packages to your door via snail mail. You get a lot of wires, a DVD of instructions and a box. You have to disconnect your modem and install the router yourself. Then you usually need some sort of mini satellite dish to get the wireless signal in properly. If you can’t figure out how to do it yourself, then Verizon will send a cable guy out to your place.

If you dont like it or for some reason you cant get it to work (which can happen, especially if your stupid ex painted all of the phone jacks to the wall), you can return everything and get your money back (minus shipping charges).

Not every state in America can get Alltel wireless internet now, but in the near future, Alltel plans to reach out to as many states as possible. Thirty-five states already enjoy Alltel wireless internet service for their phones, laptops and PDAs (Personal Data Assistants). Wireless is the most economical and fastest way to go for both business and personal use, but you need a provider. But since the technology is so new, the companies are relatively new, as well. What makes Alltel wireless internet stand out from the others?

One Of The Oldest And Growing

Alltel has been around since 1998 in Little Rock, Arkansas, and has since grown to be America?s largest wireless network. Alltel employs over 15,000 employees, so there is a very good chance that when you call customer service, someone will be there to answer. Alltel was bought out by Goldman Sachs and TPG Capital, L.P. to give it the sound financial backing to keep it going for a long time to come. Their stocks and profits consistently increase over the years.

Alltel wireless internet targets primarily cell phones, which have become as common as muck these days. They are so sure you?ll prefer Alltel to your current network, they offer a no risk free 15 day trial. If you don?t like Alltel for whatever reason, you pay nothing. But with being able to phone land lines or cell phones, flexible paying plans and automatic credit on your bill whenever you get a dropped call, you?ll probably not switch. And not only do they offer wireless service, but a cool line of cell phones.

What About Security?
