With people on the go all the time, it's important to have mobility. Nearly everyone uses a computer anymore, and the most popular type of computer is a notebook (or laptop, if you will). Most consumers think that setting up a router is difficult business, but it's actually very simple, and routers don't cost that much anymore.

Wireless Connectivity

A wireless Internet router simply plugs into your Internet modem and transmits and receives data to any wireless adapters in the area. Not only do you get a wireless network, but you can connect literally dozens of devices to the Internet with such a router. A modem only provides a single, wired connection, most commonly via Ethernet. Wireless Internet routers commonly provide several Ethernet ports as well in case you want to plug in, useful for desktops or any other computers lacking wireless adapters. However, wireless networks are being used for more than just computers these days.

All of the current generation video game consoles can connect to the Internet. The Wii and Playstation 3 both can connect to wireless networks, while the Xbox 360 and Playstation 3 have Ethernet ports (Sony's Playstation 3 has both). Also, the Xbox 360 has an optional wireless adapter that you can purchase, although it is so expensive that most folks skip it. Also, other devices like wireless printers come in handy when you don't run to purchase Ethernet cords and run them all over the house. Basically, a wireless Internet router keeps your home clutter free while still giving you access to the Internet at comparable speeds.

Some problems that wireless users run into is that wireless equipment can cost more overall than wired equipment. To connect to a wireless network, a device needs a wireless adapter. These can cost fifty dollars or more for a quality one, although they can be bought for cheaper. The fastest Internet wireless routers can cost one hundred dollars or more while most are around fifty dollars or so. A wireless Internet router also will fall behind upgraded specifications and standards, so newer wireless equipment may not be compatible with older adapters. These few problems aside, there are few things more useful in the modern household than a wireless network.

The whole point of wireless Internet is that you can be connected to the Internet without any sort of cables. It's become a staple of hotels, airports, and many restaurants, and while you might just own a desktop and not want to move around a great deal, a wireless network still gives you greater flexibility and helps you get multiple computers online without the mess and hassle of cables. However for wireless Internet router setup, you may find it easiest to plug your computer into the router (just for the setup process). This ensures connectivity while you set up the wireless channels, firewall, and passwords on the router itself.

Plug the wireless router into an electrical outlet and turn it on. Connect your Internet modem to the router, and temporarily connect your computer to the router with an Ethernet cable. It's always easy to change the computer's connection to a wireless one later. Wireless Internet router setup is actually very simple and quick. Most routers can be accessed by opening up your web browser of choice and typing 192.168.1.1 or some slight variation into the address bar. Check your router's instructions for the exact destination address.

The first thing that you'll want to once you're actually in wireless Internet router setup is to create a password for accessing the router. By default, this is usually blank or 1234, and you can change it one of your liking. You may have to enter your Internet connection information depending on what type of Internet connection you use. Next, pick a wireless channel for the router to operate on, pick a network name for the router, and then connect other computers to the network by selecting your network's name out of the list. At the end, you can choose other security features like network encryption, but it is not necessary (just recommended) to connect to the Internet. Wireless Internet router setup only takes a few minutes, and it helps you get wireless connectivity throughout the entire house.

With hundreds of different router models available, how do you know which one is best for you? Simply determine what functionality you're looking for to narrow down the results greatly. If you simply want to connect to the Internet, you don't need to worry about being able to flash third party firmware onto the router. The included firmware will do just fine. However, if you're looking for setting up your own server, then you're looking at a different feature set. There are several various wireless standards that you need to be concerned with. 802.11g is the most common today in households, although you will probably see the router with 802.11b/g functionality. That simply means it can use both 802.11b and 802.11g standards. Also, 802.11n is an upcoming standard with some improvements, and this equipment often has backwards compatibility as well. With many avid networking specialists, the best Internet wireless routers are the ones that give them a lot of options. The ability to be flashed with third party firmware seems to be a significant option networking enthusiasts look for. Such options make setting up VPNs and tweaking speeds much easier and opens up new possibilities. The average consumer, however, can save a few bucks by going with a less expensive model with some of those options disabled. The best Internet wireless routers for the average consumer simply work without any hassle and can be set up within minutes.

Security features are also important to the best Internet wireless routers. The most recent standard is WPA2 (Wi-fi Protected Access 2), which was created to provide better security over its predecessor, WEP (Wired Equivalent Privacy). You don't have to set up any security features with your router, but it's heavily recommended to at least enable some basic encryption and use passwords on your network. Also, a new standard, 802.11n, while not released yet, is nearing the final phases of testing. It will be an improvement over 802.11g, but the currently released 802.11n draft equipment does not offer significantly improved performance, so consumers would do well to stay away from such equipment until the standard is set in stone.

The best Internet wireless routers can be had for anywhere from fifty to one hundred dollars. Any less and you start to run into shoddy craftsmanship - any more, and you don't gain a substantial amount of options for your dollars. Performance and option wise, you can squeeze a little more out if you pay a lot more, but most people can get a quality router for just $50 or so. Also, most wireless Internet router setup is the same, so you shouldn't run into any trouble when you create your wireless network and connect all your computers to it.

What Are We Talking About?

In order to do a detailed comparison of high speed and wireless routers, it would probably help for you to know what a computer router is. It's a great big device that helps send one packet of information to where it's supposed to go. Without routers, there wouldnt be email or instant messaging and a lot of other geeky stuff.

The customer you gets a little router in the form of a modem that sends your electronic information to the main router at Verizon, Comcast or whoever your internet provider is. That router can then send your information along to routers of other internet networks and to individual computers. This modem or router is what connects you into the information superhighway.

What They Look Like

A physical comparison of high speed and wireless routers will not reveal too much of a difference. They both look like little black or grey boxes. They both have little LED lights to let you know if the unit is functioning or if there is a problem. However, one (the wireless) costs a heck of a lot more than the other.

What's The Big Deal?

In the advertisement comparison of high speed and wireless routers, the latter is given a lot more advertising dollars. You see WIRELESS screamed at you from full-page newspaper ads to television ads to those annoying little banners above your email. Some people (and all companies pushing wireless) claim that wireless networks are faster, faster and then even faster.

However, wireless technology is not for everyone especially if you are budget conscious. For example, this writer is self-employed in her own freelance writing business and does everything from one desktop computer her mother's (Hi, Mom!) Because of where I live, wireless is not available, but high speed cable is.

But if I ever had to do serious traveling and had to work from a laptop, then wireless would be a necessity. In business terms, comparison of high speed and wireless routers leaves the high speed in the dust.

Comparison Of High Speed And Wireless Routers

Certainly, you will want to add wireless connectivity to your home network if you own a laptop because then you can use your laptop within a certain geographical area without needing to connect the laptop to the modem with wires. Even if you want to connect your PC without wires and then the wireless routers can play an important part.

Simplest Solution

The simplest hardware solution that presents it would be to connect two wireless routers with one router placed with a PC connected to a wired network while the other router is used to connect the personal computer wirelessly. When you do this and connect two wireless routers it is known as an ad hoc wireless network which is well suited for connecting two personal computers.

On the other hand, if you need to connect (wirelessly) more than two PCs and then you will also need an Access Point (AP) that must be wireless or even use a broadband router that is wireless-enabled.

With these items of hardware, you can connect two wireless routers in so many different ways that it would be very difficult to explain all the possible permutations and combinations. Suffice to say that it is possible to use a simple home networking setup that has fully wired as well as wireless capabilities and also use a broadband router that has at least four Ethernet ports as well as integrated wireless connectivity.

A more complicated way of connect two wireless routers is to use a single port broadband router which must be connected to four or even eight port 100 MBps switch that in turn must be connected to a wireless AP.

The minimum cost in terms of money that you will spend in order to connect two wireless routers would be about five hundred dollars which would mean spending in the range of at least one hundred and fifty dollars for a couple of wireless adapters, and another two hundred dollars for a wireless AP plus fifty to hundred dollars for a wireless NIC.

Lastly, when connecting two wireless routers you must also ensure that the configuration is absolutely secure and to prevent unauthorized access you will have to look beyond Wired Equivalency Privacy standard that has thus far proved to be less than successful.
