All over the world ubiquitous broadband Internet access is bringing countries closer together. It surprises many when they find out that in China the average citizen has access to much faster download speeds and at a much lower cost than the average American. Of course the Chinese have to deal with the fact that they are viewing a censored Internet, but even that is getting better everyday. In Europe a person would be hard pressed to find a place they COULDNâ??T connect wirelessly to the Internet, while in the US users must go to a specific coffee shop or airport to do the same thing. It appears that the United States is behind the curve in offering affordable Internet access to its citizens, and short of socialized services what can be done?

U.S. Rep. Jay Inslee (D-Wash.) introduced the Wireless Innovation Act of 2007 early this year to try and close the gap between the United States and other countries in the area of broadband Wireless Internet penetration within the consumer market. This very closely resembles the Wireless Innovation Act of 2006 sponsored by John Kerry (WINN) which failed to pass the previous year but has been reintroduced as well. Specifically the bill is intended to â??make use of spectrum in the gaps or â??white spacesâ? between broadcast channels two and 51 when the transition from analog to digital television is complete in two years. With the capacity to transmit data over longer distances with less power, this prime spectrum, now reserved primarily for television broadcasting, could support a wide range of innovative wireless devices and services that arenâ??t useable in other frequenciesâ?, says Jay Inslee (D-Wash.) who is also co-sponsoring the bill.

WINN â??07 could be the ticket the country needs to increase the consumer market penetration of broadband wireless Internet, which would of course bring about new products and services both obvious and unknown. This type of legislature is designed to take fast, decisive action and correct an obvious problem. This of course means it will be delayed. So where are our ground breaking bills now?:

Fortunately, many wireless Internet problems are caused by situations that are relatively easy to fix. Even if you are not a gifted Internet technician, you may be able to restore your wireless Internet connection yourself without having to wait for technical support.

The first step in preserving your wireless Internet connection is ensuring that your connection is set up properly from the beginning. If you plan on installing your own wireless Internet hardware, be sure that the pieces of hardware will be compatible. Everything you purchase, which may include a wireless router and network cards, should have information on the package about compatibility.

If you are shopping online, the company that produces the components should have a website detailing any compatibility issues with the products. If you are making the purchase in a store, make sure that the sales representatives explain how the components should be used for optimum effectiveness. Above all, be sure that you have the option of returning any items that do not work properly or that turn out to be incompatible with your other hardware.

For wireless Internet connectivity issues that arise after the hardware has been installed, checking the cables can be helpful. If any of the cables are loose or disconnected, or if the power supply is not connected, your wireless Internet connection will be compromised or nonexistent.

Indicator lights will alert you to any problems with your connection, and lights that are flashing or off entirely are a sign that your connection needs to be checked. Turning off the router and waiting a few minutes before switching it back on can correct some wireless Internet connection problems

If you are doing business with an Internet contractor, you will have access to some technical support. Should you have problems with your modem, you will have the option of calling your provider and requesting diagnostics.

If the company’s tests reveal that your modem is working properly, you may have to recheck all your cables and connections. If, on the other hand, it turns out that your modem is the source of the problem, your contractor will probably replace that piece of equipment.

Issues with hardware supplied by your contractor are easily taken care of, and in many cases the diagnostic services will be able to pinpoint any wireless connectivity problems without a technical support representative needing to visit your home or office.

Wireless internet has many advantages for both the business as well as residential users. Wireless internet provides excellent broadband speeds. Today speeds of over 2 Mbps for commercial use (megabytes per second) are attained using wireless internet.

Previously speeds of up to 1 Mbps were acceptable for wireless internet, but with service providers providing speeds of 8 Kbps and above to business and residential customers through cables (fiber optic), expectations through wireless internet too are running high. This could mean just one thing -speeds through wireless internet will sooner or later catch up with speeds offered through fiber optic cables.

Wireless internet is more reliable as compared to internet via cable or satellite. Initial costs to the service provider too are reduced as they do not have to lay out expensive cables or pay highly for satellite transmission. All that is required is the setting up of internet towers (very similar to mobile towers). The user will be connected to the internet as long as his laptop / device receives a signal from the nearest tower (again, very similar to using a mobile phone).

Comparisons between the workings of a mobile network and wireless internet network can be made to some extent, but the working of a wireless internet network is much more complex in nature. So, how does the wireless internet work?

How WiMax works
We can single out the WiMax (Worldwide Interoperability for Microwave Access) technology that is widely used for setting up wireless internet. High speeds can be achieved over a wireless network using this technology. Based on the IEEE 802.16 communications standard, this technology if fast replacing cumbersome cable and expensive satellite networks.

The WiMax network consists of base stations (similar to mobile towers) set up by the service provider, and a receiving antenna (similar to a mobile phone antenna) at the user end. The user pays the service provider for wireless internet access, just as they would for a normal internet connection via a cable network. The service provider provides the end user with the software, a login and a password. Most of the laptop manufacturers today equip high-end models with a built in antenna bundled with the required software for the unit to be WiMax compatible. The service provider beams the internet signals from the base station. The antenna at the user end catch the signals, providing uninterrupted internet as long as the signal is available. With a laptop equipped with an antenna you could be connected to the internet wherever the signal is available from the base station. As with mobile phones that catch a signal from the nearest tower of the particular service provider, so is it with new generation WiMax services. One WiMax base station can send signals over distances of several miles depending on the terrain. The more flat the terrain, more the coverage. Once you move from one base station area to another, your laptop receiver will hook up to the other base station (of the same service provider) with a stronger signal. As WiMax service providers spread out their operations, everyone will be connected to really high-speed internet 24X7 wherever they are.

Other common uses of wireless internet
Wireless internet is not limited to WiMax. Most of us have used some sort of wireless internet some time or the other. GPRS (General Packet Radio Service) is one such example. When a mobile user subscribed to the GPRS service, the receiving mobile unit could receive voice as well as data signals. In simple terms, the mobile phone could be used as a phone for voice calls and also as a modem to connect to the computer to surf the internet. The only limiting factor here was the speed which was very slow. This technology was gradually replaced by the EDGE (Enhanced Data Rates for Global Evolution) technology. EDGE was an enhancement over GPRS, able to provide more capacity for voice traffic and at the same time have high-speed data transfer capabilities.

EDGE technology has recently been replaced by the 3G (Third Generation) technology. Speeds of over 2Mbps are attained using 3G technology. These speeds will keep on increasing with advancing technology. 4G (Forth Generation) will be the next main change in this domain. 4G research is being carried out, but no frequencies have yet been allocated for this technology. Estimates are that 4G will be implemented around 2010-2012, but with the speed at which technology is advancing, it could happen earlier.

Mobile phones have passed the stage where they were used to just make and receive calls. Today one can buy mobile phones that do almost everything that your personal computer or laptop can. Operating systems can be loaded onto mobiles, virtually making them one instrument for all your phone and computing needs. This is where wireless internet will play a major role in the future. Cables will still be used for the internet till the time wireless internet can match data transfer speeds of cables. Once this happens, technologies such as WiMax and 3G will help in making this world a 24X7 connected, wire-free world.

Wireless Internet Cards for Business Travelers

I am unabashedly amazed with wireless internet. To think that I can walk into a local coffee shop or library, turn on a laptop computer, and instantly be able to surf the internet at a relatively high speed strikes me as one of the most obviously advantages of the recent advancements in wireless internet technology.

This past year I picked up a personal digital assistant (PDA) that is equipped with wireless technology, allowing me to use a stripped-down version of Internet Explorer to access information through wireless internet just like laptops and desktop computers. With my little wireless-enabled PDA I quite literally am able to hold the entire internet in the palm of my hand, allowing me to watch videos, check my email, or text message friends. It comes in handy again and again, whether I’m eating with friends and we want to know what movies are playing to checking my email while waiting for my bus (at a bus stop that’s conveniently located near a library’s wireless hot spot).

One of the only drawbacks of wireless internet technology is that wireless-enabled devices like my PDA or most people’s laptops need to be fairly near to a wireless hot spot in order for the connection to be established. This leads to many people roaming around, looking for good connections. The search for wireless hot spots has even lead to “war driving,” a practice of questionable legality where people drive around in their cars with laptops setup to search out unlocked wireless internet networks, both public and private. Many different businesses are picking up on the trend, offering wireless internet hot spots in coffee shops, restaurants, and retail stores.

Many businesses are nice enough to provide wireless internet hot spots for free, though it’s usually a good practice to patronize these places if you use their wireless connection to encourage them to keep their access free. Libraries can be great for this service, as can some coffee shops. Some chains offer free wireless at all of their locations, making it pretty easy to track down free wireless hot spots. Some websites even keep track of these free hotspots, working with Mapquest or Google maps to provide maps of free hot spots.

A few other businesses, especially coffee shops, offer wireless internet connections with purchases, but most of the other wireless internet hot spots require payment to access the service. This can come either through a subscription to the service provider or through a credit card payment, though if you’re not a subscriber these hot spots can get expensive quite quickly.

What Is Wireless Internet And How Can I Get It?

Obtaining and connecting to wireless Internet access is rather simple and can be easily accomplished by both the residential and business user.  The result is well worth the effort and will become the biggest advantage to using your laptop PC.

To set up a wireless connection, you must have a broadband Internet connection.  This service can be obtained from your local cable company at a monthly cost.  The service is provided to you through a high speed cable connection set up in your business or residence.

Once your broadband Internet connection is installed, you will need to purchase a wireless router and a wireless network adapter.  The wireless router acts as a base for your broadband Internet connection and converts the connection into wireless access.  The wireless network adapter is needed if you have an older computer that does not have wireless capability. The adapter will assist your computer in connecting with the router.  If you have a newer computer with built-in wireless capability, there is no need to purchase a wireless network adapter.

When connecting the wireless router you will need to disconnect the DSL (Digital Subscriber Line) modem that was installed with your broadband Internet connection.  Connect the router to your DSL modem by disconnecting the network cable from the back of your computer and connecting it to the Internet port located in the back of the router.

Reconnect the DSL modem and wait until it connects to the Internet before engaging the wireless router.  You will know when your router is functioning properly when the light is on signaling an Internet connection.

You will need to configure the wireless router through Internet Explorer.  This is easily accomplished by typing in the URL address and identification number of the router.  This information can be located in the instructions that are included with the purchase of the router.  You will need to read the instructions due to the fact that the configuration settings procedure will vary according to the brand of the wireless router you purchased.

If your computer has built-in wireless capability it should automatically locate the wireless connection.  If it is necessary to go with the network adapter, you will need to connect it to an available USB port on your computer.  For Windows XP and higher, it will automatically find the adapter and then walk you through the configuration.

For best results, the wireless router should be placed in a central location and away from metal objects that could potentially interfere with the wireless signal.  If the signal tends to be consistently weak you can always employ a wireless repeater to extend the range and strengthen the signal.

If you have cordless telephones in your business or residence, be sure to set your wireless router on a different channel for wireless Internet other than the channel used by your telephone.  If you omit this step, your Internet connection will pick up the telephone signal and constantly disconnect every time the telephone rings.

Wireless connectivity means greater mobility and flexibility when it comes to your computing experience and expansion of your computer’s capabilities thanks to high speed wireless.

Internet is general has changed our lives in many ways. Apart from developing a whole new generation of entrepreneurs, internet has also benefited the common man in a significant way. From its invention till today, internet has changed a lot, be it the benefits it offers, ease of use and of course the way we access the internet. Wireless internet access is one of the most significant developments in the field of information technology and has affected almost everybody.
