Whatever Gave Them The Idea

In Philadelphia, the class divide is widening rapidly. This means the rich get richer and the poor get poorer. Philadelphia has a very high standard of living, a 7% sales tax and wage tax and often a bankrupt city budget. Many people cannot live on minimum wage, or even two a job a dollar over the minimum wage. In this way, many people are eliminated from getting higher paying jobs because they can?t afford job training, college or even learning how to read.

Broadband wireless internet for every Philadelphian seemed to be the answer. This could give the poor the information access they need as well as encouraging others to move to the city. This was also hoped to help businesses large and small. Since broadband wireless internet was becoming less and less expensive, it seemed financially possible to fund broadband wireless internet rather than costly job training programs that many poor Philadelphians might not be able to travel to.

What Happened

First off, Philadelphia Mayor Street awarded the contract to EarthLink, even though industry leaders like Verizon were willing to give the project a go. Things went downhill fast ever since. In test market after test market, everyone who volunteered for publicly funded broadband wireless internet service reported how unhappy they were with the service. Often, the service would only work one day a week, or only a few minutes a day.

Broadband wireless internet reception technology just is not at the point of being able to handle a consistently strong signal to a huge area like an entire city (or even a third of a city) because buildings, power lines and even walls interfere with reception. However, individual WiFi accounts work very well, since the average WiFi user is on the go and can physically take phones or laptops to hotspots. Until WiFi reception technology improves, there will never be municipally funded WiFi.

The most attractive aspect of getting high speed wireless internet access is that it costs so much less than dial up, cable or broadband. The information is not coming through a modem or cable lines, but through the air in radio waves. So, you don?t need to be hooked up to a cable or telephone wire in order to get your information to your computer or PA or cell phone screen. All you need is to find a ?Wi-Fi hotspot?.

And, as the name implies, high speed internet access is a lot faster than broadband, cable and goes warp speed compared to dial-up. If you view a lot of movies or live news feeds, this is especially desirable. If you are hooked up to your business intranet, you can gain the information you need to your employees and clients as quick as light. And this technology is portable, so you are not stuck in one place.

The Cons

The biggest downside to high speed wireless internet access is the lack of security as compared to dial up, cable or broadband. Remember how I told you that information is transmitted through the air like radio waves? Well, if the radio is tuned to the right frequency, then anyone with a radio can listen in. This leaves your valuable data exposed to online criminals.

Security is being improved in high speed wireless internet access all of the time. Many wifi packages send the information out encrypted, meaning that unless you have the right password, the information an online criminal can pick up will look like mumbo jumbo. But you also need to use your common sense, such as not letting anyone peer over your shoulder.

Another downside is that you need to get new equipment that can pick up and receive Wi-Fi signals. Not every desktop or laptop can be converted to Wi-Fi. And high speed internet access signals are not constant all over the world. And since Wi-Fi is becoming do popular, too many Wi-Fi devices too close to each other will interrupt the signal.

This is where you have to shell the money out, but the costs have been getting lower all the time.

Also, you just can?t set your computer anywhere and pick up a good quality signal. Like a radio, you need to move it around to the best place to find the best signal. These signal places are called ?hotspots? in geek-ese. In your home, you really need a modem or small satellite dish in order to be able to get a hotspot in your home.

The World Wants To Know: How Does Wireless Internet Work?

The first step to laptop wireless internet access is to get a laptop. I know it seems obvious but this is a complete guide and we are starting at step one. But maybe it is not so obvious. Does your laptop have a built-in wireless internet connection for easy laptop wireless internet access? If you do not have the wireless connection built in then there are two ways you can get it. You can get a PCMCIA card that is a wireless internet card or you can get a PCMCIA card from a provider that connects you specifically to their wireless internet. A PCMCIA card is a card that fits into those slots on the side of your laptop. Most people refer to them as expansion slots. Whatever the terminology you prefer the point is that this is where you can add your laptop wireless internet connection if you do not already have one.

Wi-fi is that public internet connection you get in airports and restaurants that allows you to connect to the internet simply by sitting in a chair and turning on your laptop that has the built-in wireless connection or the expansion card with the wireless connection. There are a lot of ways to connect to wi-fi and probably the worst way is on a case by case basis. Your best bet is to research the different wi-fi providers and find the one that seems to have the coverage you are looking for and get a monthly plan with that provider. Paying for each connection is not only costly but dangerous as you never know who is listening when you are broadcasting your credit card information over a public network.

Cellular

Long before there was public wi-fi there was cellular connections to the internet for your laptop. This was the only type of mobile wireless internet that existed for years and for what it did it was very effective. Today the various cellular phone companies are offering special cards that you put into the expansion slots on your computer in lieu of connecting your actual cell phone to your laptop which is the way it used to be done. There are some good and bad things about cellular connections.

A good thing is that theoretically you should be able to connect your laptop to a cellular connection anywhere you can use your cell phone. It is theoretically because sometimes you cannot get a strong enough signal to stay on the internet where you can still get cellular phone reception. A bad thing is the quality of the signal. As you know from using your cellular phone that cellular connections are not reliable and tend to fade in and out. This can get pretty frustrating when you are downloading, or uploading, something and it is this volatility that limits the range of a cellular connection.

Wi-Fi

Wi-fi is the fastest growing form of mobile wireless internet access and it is looking like wi-fi will be the way you connect your laptop to the internet in the not too distant future. Some major cities in the United States are already wired completely for wi-fi and the rest of the country needs to catch up. The plan, or at least the grand plan, is to offer wi-fi anywhere in the United States even in areas you cannot get cellular reception in. It seems like a pipe dream but if it could happen it would be nice.

Wi-fi is a public access internet connection that you will find in an airport or restaurant that allows you to connect to the internet without cables or need of a cell phone. You can sign up for a wi-fi service through a carrier like AT&T and that can save you a lot of money if you are always going to be around AT&T wi-fi. If you are near anyone else?s wi-fi then you will need to pay an hourly fee. That is the drawback to wi-fi, it is too new to be really effective right now. Too many corporations are fighting to control wi-fi and that makes for a mess right now. But if they ever straighten it out then wi-fi will change the world.

The honeymoon is officially over with the wireless for internet and the consumer. Anything smaller, more powerful and shiny gets the wonder working and the wallet out. Although WiFi technology was created as early as 1991, it hasn?t become widely available to the average consumer until the last decade. The most attractive aspect about the wireless internet was the cost ? or rather, the lack thereof. This made growth of WiFi more than wireless internet providers or engineers could handle.

The main problem with the wireless for internet has been its relatively lax security. The wireless internet works like radio waves ? anyone with the right ?radio? (so to speak) can pick up the transmissions. This has given rise to a form of computer hacking called ?sniffing?, where online criminals eavesdrop and use whatever data they discover, including credit card numbers and bank account numbers, for fraud.

The wireless internet industry hasn?t turned a blind eye to sniffers, and has set about trying to counter them through the use of encryption and double ID certifications. Because of WiFi?s limited range, at least you don?t have to worry about anyone on the planet stealing your personal data, like in the traditional internet (who thought we?d ever see those two words together?) A sniffer actually has to be physically in the same area and on the same network in order to pick up a transmission.

Self-Regulating

The wireless for internet industry has so far been self-regulating, and looks as if it?s going to stay that way. They cooperate with governments when they have to, but also look out for the individual client. Considering all that governments have to worry about, perhaps it?s best that WiFi be left to the WiFi industry specialists. But they always have to answer to the consumer, who can be a lot stricter than government regulations.

However, the governments of America, Japan and the European Union do regulate Wifi antennas? Equivalent Isotropic Radiated Power (EIRPs, also known as dBm or mW). Yes, these antennas put out a bit of radiation that may be detrimental to the public health, which is why they are situated in low to no populated areas.

With still some kinks to work out in the areas of security, regulation and consistency of signals, the honeymoon with WiFi is over. However, there is a definite commitment to keeping the marriage going on both sides. Wireless for internet technology always improves and customers continue to buy what?s available.

Where To Get Wireless Internet Access

There are regular Internet hookups but then you also have the option of using wireless Internet connections if this is going to be more convenient for you.

You have an array of different options when it comes to the Internet, and one of the best involves the wireless Internet connections that are available to you. A wireless Internet connection enables a user to be able to connect to the Internet without any attachments and therefore makes it much easier and more convenient for you. Wireless networks exist in many locations, and you usually just need the basic computer equipment in order to take advantage of these networks.

Setting up a Connection

If you want to set up a wireless Internet connection there are a few simple steps that you need to take. It is a very simple procedure and all you need to do is go to your Start Menu, Control Panel, and then Network and Internet. Now you want to go to Network and Sharing Center and select Connect a Network.

Choose the Show All option and hit the refresh button, and if you find an active network connection here then you want to select the one that you want and click on Connect. Make sure you check the option that says Start This Connection Automatically because if you check this option you will be connected automatically to the wireless network that you selected every single time you log in.

There are just a few more steps involved if you are not able to find a network, and first you want to find the Connect to a Network window, click on Set up a Connection or Network, select Manually Connect to a Wireless Network, and press Next. Now you want to enter the Network name, and choose the security type and encryption that you want to use on your wireless network.

A wireless internet connection is a radio wave that can travel outside your home and make your wireless internet network vulnerable to people using it without your knowledge or possibly even stealing your information. Many people make the mistake of thinking that their wireless internet router just needs to be plugged into their broadband modem to begin working. For almost all of the routers available today you need to do what is called hardwiring one main computer to it. Hardwiring a computer means that you are connecting just one computer to the wireless internet router using a standard network cable. This is necessary mostly for security reasons because any changes that need to be made to your router need to be done with a direct wire.
